Nview Specta C and Video VGA Converter Again

Hello
Proudly owner of an working Nview Spectra C i have
now the problem to decide which TV/VGA Converter to buy.
I live in germany , so in the Pal world.

I have read all related threads but i have not found the
correct answer. Additionally it's hard to get here
an TV-3000 ( think the tuner is also fixed to North America )

So, i want to know if someone has experience with
Grand Televiewer Products
http://www.grand.com.tw/PRODUCT/TVBOX/pro/televiewer_pro.html
or http://www.grandtec.com/

I think that some of the following features
could be better then a simple Linedoubling.

Here some features.
3 D Motion-adaptive interfiled de-interlacing.
Supports 3:2 pulldown conversion for film mode.
Supports 2:2 pulldown graphic mode.
50-to-60HZ frame rate conversion automatic source mode detection (NTSC/PAL(SECAM) for Video, S-Video).
The DEINTERLACE output mode can be changed from 640*480,
800*600 to 1024*768(60Hz&75Hz).

So, i don't know if i need them and if the Spectra C can
handle this, but IF then it would be fine because this device
i can get here nearby.

So, important is for me . Will it work with my Spectra.

Perharps someone has experience with this device.
best regards
Rainer

Hi Rainer,

I already commented on this in another thread, but here are my experiences with the Spectra C and VGA/video converters:

I have tried a couple of video/vga converters with my nView Spectra C.

The first was the Grand Video Explorer (cost 125 UKP). This worked OK for TV and home recorded VHS tapes but had horizontal tear lines (about 5) on pre-recorded VHS tapes. I found that the extra features of the Grand device didn't make much difference as the Spectra is pretty fussy about its input i.e. 640x480 only.

The second was the Imagine Graphics VideoMate 4 (cost 23.50 UKP - pcb only). This gave reasonably good results without the tearing seen on the Grand.

Finally however, I decided to buy a progressive scan DVD player with VGA output. I choose the Arianet PDVD-2255 (www.aria.co.uk) at a cost of 88 UKP. The results are fantastic! The colour and contrast are MUCH better with the direct VGA feed rather than using a converter. The signals are much less noisy. I really can't recommend this route enough.

Obviously I still have to use the VideoMate for watching TV and VHS tapes, but I mostly use the projector for watching movies anyway, so it's nearly always DVDs now.

Video Mate 4

Ok, thanx but perharps it's clearer when i explain that i'm
not going the HDTV way.
I'm going the DIVx / Xvid way.

I have a Matrox Dual Head Graphic card and all AVIs
are full screen at the secondary out in TV Pal format.
This looks great for me.
Since a half year i transfer this video out signal via
a 2.4 Ghz transmitter to the living room.

I thought this picture would be very bad so i was very
sceptic before. But it's pretty fine. All my friends
run, don't walk to get the same transmitters.

So, now you know that a DVD with progessive scan is
not the option in the moment. But this Grand Televiewer
will give me the option to add this later.

Video Mate 4 can be a really good alterntive because i need
no tuner at all, but the web side doesn't offer any technical specifications. They sold it now for 20 BP. That's it.
No manuals, no pictures.

It would be nice if you can you bring some light into this.
Perharps you have further infos about this good old
stuff. ( picture of the pcb to get a feeling for the size )

Is this a normal Line Doubling Device.
Will it has only half of the resolution.
Does it something like Frame buffering.
Is the vertical refresh rate adjustable to 60 or 70 Hz
with a Pal Source.

best regards
Rainer

Video Mate 4

I forgot to say that between the
Grand Video Explorer you have tested and the latest
Stuff of the Grandtec Series there COULD be a few
major improvements.

If i only have a few downsides when watching
Video Cassettes this would not be a problem for me.

The great wish is to get a reasonable vertical refresh
rate between 60 and 70 Hz.

I'm Interested only in Live TV (sports) or Divx Playback.
Also i didn't want to serve the internet with a 640x480
resolution.

best regards
Rainer

Hi again,

I understand what you are trying to do now. I also use a 2.4GHz sender for my VCR and TV pictures (only the DVD is plugged in direct). The video sender and the VGA out from the DVD plug into the VideoMate and I switch between sources using the PC/AV switch on the VideoMate.

The VideoMate is just a regular line doubler. I have scanned the entire manual that came with it (all one page). I will try and email it to you if you like. I have written the size of the PCB on too. Hope this helps.
