Just out of curiosity, what input coupling caps were used with each of the amps (excluding the SI which you already said used 2.2uF polypropylenes). I only ask because I know the AMP3 gives you a choice of 3.3uF electrolytic or 2.2uF ceramic and I don't know what the others come with.

Not 100% sure, but I think the electrolytic caps in the Charlize are Cerefine.

wiring up charlize

i'm embarrassed to ask this but... when wiring up the charlize, do you wire the ground from the input (rca, or mini) to the 2 holes on the board? or is it just left and right?

from the diyparadise site:
"You can wire the input to a volume pot of 50kohm to make it an integrated amp or just plain RCA sockets. Please note as TA2020 output stage is bridged, DO NOT tie them to GND."
🙄

Hi,

you have to solder the ground. Look at the left of the picture :

Hi Nuuk,

good article. I had tweaked a t-amp, and built 2 amp3, and I definitely prefer the amp3. I don't find it tiredning, but maybe that's because I'm using PIO input caps (I've also tried Auricaps, and they are also pretty good).

Question: Do you think that the differences you hear are mainly related to the tripath chip (2024 vs 2020), or to the design, including differences in the quality and nature of input caps ?

That's very difficult to answer objectively! Could it be co-incidence that I prefered the two amps using the 2020 chip? I've just written to Jan at 41Hz to see if he would be so kind as to let me have an AMP-6 for review. That also uses the 2020 chip so it would be good to compare it with both the AMP-3 and the other 2020 amps! 😉

Hope Jan sends you an Amp 6... I'm personally caught in the whole Amp 6/Charlize dilema!

Anyway, if you don't mind another question, could you give a little more detail on the differences between the battery sound and the SMPS sound with these amps?

Thanks
