Notre Dame cathedral

I have no faith in all those beliefs.... 🙂

Yes, as has been amply demonstrated, it would be utterly pointless to question said beliefs without understanding what those beliefs are, what they mean, or even what they stand for.

It would be like as if knowing how many angels could stand on the head of a pin. I believe it would have to be a very big pin with a very small point, giving plenty of room on top. ToS

The cause of the fire was a lack of contingency built into the restoration budget covering the worst case scenario of a fire within the wooden roof. That it was caused by an electrical short showed a lack of budget contingency in preventative maintenance of onsite kit. That it took over 30 frantic minutes to pinpoint the exact source of the fire means a government raised conservation budget of €150 million could only hope to wing it with a prayer that it never happened. Well, it happened. Ironic that within 24hours the corporate uber rich (who happen to hate each other) raised nearly €1 billion, with a pledge by Macron to complete the repairs within 5 years. This maybe political expediency, but I doubt it will happen. It took 200 years to build Notre Dame, it has stood for 850 years, and perhaps wise to spend maybe another 50-100 years for a complete restoration.

On the day of the fire, everything else worked flawlessly. The Cathedral staff, plus ancillary workers and emergency services all merged their rehearsals together seamlessly within seconds of the alarm being raised. Another 15 to 30 minutes and the whole structure would have been lost.

It reminds me of the 'O' rings debacle with the Challenger space shuttle disaster. After much hand ringing and soul searching, what happened at Notre Dame will inevitably happen again sometime elsewhere. What bothers me is all the hurry and flurry to fix something that if done properly, should hopefully stand for yet another 850 or more years.

The problem, reaction and solution is political, and I will leave it at that. ToS

Didn't Bon Jovi:eguitar::note: write that?

Welcome to the world. It is basically the norm, unfortunately.

At least while holding a torch you have an idea of what you are doing as it’s happening!
Unfortunately it's often when they point the torch away to admire or complete their work that they light things behind them. There's no more smoldering fires flaring up at night as they are not permitted to torch apply to combustibles.
I'm glad we're blaming the engineers and construction workers now!
Nah, it's the Architect's fault. 🙂

Ah yes, they said that about Frank Lloyd Wright too. They always say that about famous architects. His copper roofs were pretty complicated so soldering them was tricky. Complicated shapes are certainly harder to build than rectangular boxes.

Seems that perhaps the roofing contractors could be blamed just a little bit? After all they are the "crafters" Architecture is unusual in that the design and construction of a project that attempts to be art and in various hands. And many issues can be covered up.
Of course now we have roof consultants and inspectors -like Cal! 🙂 to blame.

Every building crafted by Frank Gehry leaks!
