a friend wants to us his laptop's media center on his HT for audio/ dvd/ blueray. the laptop has hdmi and 1/8" outputs but his reciever has no hdmi inputs. he could go straight to his lcd tv or analogue audio to the denon reciever but wants to use digital a/v to the reciever. the only thing i can think of is a good sound card with digital coaxial outputs. is this correct, and what is a good card to look for?

any help would be appreciated
david

Check the 1/8" outputs first. On my laptop they double as optical outputs so no sound card is needed. Just get an optical cable and 1/8" optical adapter and connect the other end to the AV receiver.

If the laptop doesn't have digital outputs already, you can get a USB to SPDIF from Hagtech or ebay. For my older laptop, I was using an M-Audio Sonica with optical out.

as ECM says, a usb to spdif box would be a good idea, most of them electrically isolate computer interference and provide coax or various outputs, i use a trends audio UD-10.1 and am very pleased with its sound, i believe it to better than the hag unit.

hey blue,

that one from amazon wouldnt work, it does say not compatible at all with computer I/O

the end connector although the same connector, looks to be more like a cable for projectors or alike, i am pretty sure it would involve some kind of electronic processing in a box, not inline and discrete like that amazon product which simply terminates the end to a different format.

by the way, whatever you plump for, be careful, as some boxes for sale on ebay, are the opposite way you need (directional) and will only convert component outputs to HDMI, you need HDMI->YPbPr

HTH

heres a link, damn expensive (maybe a single input is available?)http://www.switchbox.com.au/product_info.php/cPath/36/products_id/221
