Seems like the 1.5-way configuration is a good way to reduce low frequency excursion and compensate for baffle step loss without much additional complexity. Why aren't 1.5-ways more popular among the full-range crowd?
Are you including Azura / Oris and similar as 1.5 way systems?
It seems like this style was seeing a lot more interest about 10 years ago. Still lots of info around on them, some good, some pretty hyperbolic.
Also lots of OB systems are 1.5 - the Basszilla springs to mind.

hifu,
Are you referring to designs with 2 x wide-band drivers of the same model placed on the front baffle with the lower one running as a 0.5 driver?
It is likely that this is not more popular due to:
1. Increase in the cost of drivers for the project
2. Concerns about comb-filtering (though comb filtering effects might not be as bad as assumed, and running the driver 0.5 should reduce that further)
3. Limited sharing of success stories from such (if any) builds

Omega speakers does it, and claim great success running it that way.
I had been wondered about the FH3 or FH3XL doing that for a bit more bass extension. It was idle wondering but did feel curious...🙂

Would give more quantity not extension, but it could be worked.

system in Dave's photos is CSS's VRW126X and earlier version I think of his dome tweeter LD22 - full MTM 2-way in essentially a stacked pair of FH3s - absent the 5dg tilt
I might prefer the midrange to top end of a single Alpair 10.3, but a pair of those midbass drivers certainly deliver in the bottom end.

I'm not sure I understand the concept. What is the advantage vs. using a dedicated woofer as in a FAST system?
It is just another way of doing things. Unlike a FAST driver integration is pretty much guaranteed to be very good.
The same question could be asked of a 2.5way vrs 3-way system.

You're wasting so much of the drivers' ability with a 1.5 way. Makes little sense unless you have 4 of the driver sitting around. For the amount of $ to get a good FR driver you can buy a dedicated woofer.
hehe, how did I know you were gonna say that? 🙂
Seriously though, I can't follow the line of thinking if one is purchasing drivers for the purpose. You show me a 1.5 way and I'll use the same FR and spend the same $total on a FAST and we'll have a shootout.

Cal, y'all need to remember that some of us idiots do have multiples of particular FR drivers kicking around with which to experiment
That said, I'd be inclined to agree with your point - but please, no more talks of shoot-outs - "meet me at sunrise, 10,000 sterling takes all"

Chris, Chris, Chris... you know I'm a man of a gentle nature and kind soul. A man who would never consider the use of a firearm unless to defend himself or to inquire if the neighbours would like to be quiet as it was late at night and I was sleepy. Chris, shootout is also a sports term that...oh wait a minute, I forgot about you and sports.
Yes, we both find ourselves in that group of those with too many drivers to ever use, but those are the persons that also have more woofers than they know what to do with so my point remains unaltered old chap. Of all the 'way out there' designs I've ventured into , this one strikes me as a larger sacrifice than I have considered.

I'd be inclined to go FAST as well
One only needs to look at what we have built in FASTS (6-7?) and 1.5way (0)

Cal, ole buddy, I was alluding - poorly it seems - to the gauntlet thrown in another current thread - one absent ego and testosterone, and in which bonhommie and mutual understanding abound - you, like the annual weekend in August at Dave & Ruth's mountain top retreat
we really must institute sunrise yoga sessions, I think

Not so poorly, as I got that.🙂

Ah yes, in my desire to ensure my Mod duties are kept current, I hastened, in fact overlooked, the insensitivity of my writings. For that mea culpa, I welcome the regiment of a shootout, I mean yoga, at sunrise. Peace be with you.
