Long story but true. If your eustachian tube gets stopped up long enough, the air inside is absorbed by surrounding tissue and your body begins to fill the vacuum with fluid. When you hold and blow, you are equalizing pressure. My right ear tube plugged up for about two years. I became deaf in that ear. I even quit listening to music because it sounded so bad. ENT doctors, all kinds of meds, doctors poking holes in my eardrum to drain fluids. Hole heals, fluid fills up again. They finally wanted to put a tube through my eardrum. My daughter kept telling me to see a chiropractor. So, I thought what the heck as I have tried everything else. First trip, my ear popped and started draining through my eustachian tube. Plugged back up that night. Second trip it popped and has been clear ever since (I see the chiropractor once a month). Seems from an old neck injury. the muscles on one side of my neck tighten and pinch the e-tube closed. Funny side effect was that when it first popped open, all sounds seemed to be coming from way over to one side of me. My brain had compensated for so long and took it about a week to relearn how to hear with two ears. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
I do this several times a day.
So did Ernest Borgnine, indeed, he attributed his longevity to it.
