In simple, the answer is always over build for the power supply.

In short, the lesser rated psu will be ok as long as you dont crank up the amplifier.... but if its a KID with an Ipod... you may run into something there. You know how we all like to crank up our amps till they distort badly to get those speakers 'bumpin'.

ok well not me I'm a bit reserved... Ilike to crank them up without distortion ;)

Anyways, There are some cheap transformers on tubesandmore by hammond. http://www.tubesandmore.com/scripts...vclients/cemirror/ELEVATOR.FXP?item=P-T180Q50 This is one such. Its outside diameter is 5", heigth is 2". It only costs $20. its specs are 25v-0-25v 300va, meaning it will power even the most power hungry amps. http://www.tubesandmore.com/scripts...vclients/cemirror/ELEVATOR.FXP?item=P-T181L40 you may even try this one, 20v-0-20v 90va, same price only this one is potted.

For one channel, 60va is an absolute minimum, and 80va leaves a bit of "wiggle room".

I'd surf FleaBay for a surplus industrial transformer. A toroid is not necessary; any trafo with an output between 35vct and 50vct (or dual 18-25v secondaries) will be fine. I paid 15$ each for 2 (possibly medical-grade) 330va dual-secondary 20v transformers.

Lets make some stereotypes shall we? :dodgy:

ROFL! Just kidding. I don't do that that often but I know a lot of kids my age do. As you said, I like to crank it up without distortion.

What if your plug is 2 prong with no ground? :(

I'm making a LM3886 amp that has metal and wood for a case. Does it need the third ground electrical prong to be attached to the case? (my plug that I'm using is 2 prong though) Or can I do something else? I have however seen amps that do not have a third prong but have a metal enclosure.

Hi,
double insulated equipment MUST meet double insulated standards (all of them).

Do you know what they are?

I don't. I imagine they are quite onerous.

I would suggest that it is potentially fatal to attempt to design and build an amplifier that tries to avoid the use of the Safety Earth without understanding the regulations, solutions that allow such equipment to be used (safely) and implementing them appropriately.

DJ,

I'm 18- so yeah I have some of that in me still

I do gotta be careful with my vintage equipment though.

As for car stuff, you'd need a SMPS supply to do that... Not the hardest thing in the world to build but you do need an O-scope to make sure you don't blow it up when you turn it on.

I've built some tube stuff already with great success, but since I cant find a decent free server I cant load any derned pics!
