Hi guys!

I've been reeding your forum for a little while, and I must say
you really got a ton of info here, sometimes too much to find
your way around even with the search feature, but too much
is always better than nothing, anyway keep up this great forum,

here's my question,

I found your forum after seeing the Tom's Hardware guide
to BYO Projector, and came to find more info overhere,

I want to build my projector using and OHP and lcd screen,
I'm not dumb but not a genius in electronic,

I already have at home a Bell and Howell OHP model 301
witch is very old but working fine, and I can get a 3m 9100 OHP
for about 150$can,

Witch one should I used? is the B&H too old for the job?
I also want a good clear picture(I've seen good and some pixlated
picture from members here)

Also I intend to used a 14 or 15 inch LCD with a 1280x1024 res.
that i will be buying probably next week.

any help or advice will be greatly appreciated

Thanks for your time

Jeff (branspankingnewb)

seen good and some pixlated

Big pixels are not that bad - My old dusty 640x480
Sharp QA1200 is good looking at 14 feet away
the screen is about 7 foot by 7 foot - maybe a little
bigger ,the pixels are about the size of this small letter
" o " that o looks big, but at 14 feet is looks nice
and you can put it out of focus to remove - I like
the pixels it makes the image super sharp looking

is the B&H too old for the job? - If it has a lamp inside
under a frensel lens and a lens up at the top in the focus
arm - is should work - I had a old crappy plastic OHP
scratched lens and all - seamed to work well

Here is a link that might help

http://www.louisville.edu/~wchall01/diyprojector/overheads.htm

and here
http://www.3m.com/meetingnetwork/products/product_guide_overhead.html

I found a 3m 2150 - it has all the bells - I may later on retro fit
it and put a Metal Halide lamp in it - its got a condenser, reflector
a knob to adjust the distance of the lamp from the frensnell,
triplet and keystone adjust - its real nice and the arm folds
down and locks - plus there is enough room to put a ballast
inside - because there is a stepdown transformer about the
size of the ballast - The 3M are real nice - but you could
do a nice DIY projector for the cost of that 3m 9100 OHP
but you would still have to get the LCD

look here

http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/

or
http://www.lumenlab.com/

If you going to use it every day - add up the cost of the lamps
the ENX lamps for the 3m 9100 OHP last about 80 to 130 hours
and cost $11 usd each - 5 hours a day and in 30 days or less you
need a new lamp - thats about $132 a year and its only 2500
ANSI lumens - at 5 hours a day, every day, in one year is about
1800 hours - a 250w metal halide lamp is about 20,000 lumens
and last 10,000 or more hours - and the total cost, ballast and
lamp could be about $100 + or -

Just think about what you want - remember you may end up using
it every day -

From what I herd that OHP uses a DYS/DYV/BHC lamp
and cost about $5 + or -

here is some info - if its 17,500 initial lumens like they said
thats good, But with a Average Life 75 Hours its still going
to add up in cost - and its 600w -

I need at least 4000 lumens to have a good picture quality
Yes - more light the better

Bell and Howell OHP model 301

I can shed a bit of light regarding this projector. (its the projector I use in my system) It is a pretty good projector that has a pretty good optics package on it. This projector does in fact put out close to 1800 lumens (will hurt your eyes if ya look at the light). BUT remember when you put your panel on there it will drop the light down pretty good. The bulb changer is a plus. The 600 watt DYS bulb is rated at somewhere around 75 hours use (although I only use mine about 50 hrs before it starts getting dark on me). I have a Metal Halide setup ready to go but at the moment I hate to tear into something thats working as good as this is.

If you look around you can get the bulbs really cheap (last lot I bought was $2 ea and I ordered 10 so I am stocked up for a while. The place I got them from is not running the same deal on them at the moment though.

Pictures of my setup is at www.chrisrowland.com/
Please note that they do not do the actual projector justice.

There is one issue with this projector. I have only tried Nview Panels on this projector (Nview Spectra plus and my current Nview Spectra C) but the arm on this projector is in the worst place possible for these panels. To make a long story short the panel hits up against the arm of the ohp and its kind of a pain to set it up right. Other than that though I have no complaints (other than I cracked the fresnel lens in that overhead) :bawling:
