Im from the uk and would like to build me a pj.
but first i wanna congratulate u peeps for such a information base
i came across this site yesterday and i havent been able to pick my jaw up off the floor since.
Props to all u pioneers out there.
and damn u for keeping me up all night reading
So ive been looking for a hobby to get into and lcd pj building seems perfect.
im just looking for a fun mod to get my feet wet with at first.
i dont need anthing over 45" to start with, a proper build will come later
Ive got a good idea on how im gonna go with this but just wanted to clear a few things up before i throw any money at it.
I like the look of the slide projector lcd mod but wasnt sure about the pixelation using a ps2 pad screen because ppl said the resolution was too low , would using a lilliput 2.5" screen work any better. and what would be the ideal slide pj to put it in?
also any ideas on light mods due to low bulb time on slide pj's would be a great help.
oh and if anybody knows of a place to get parts in the uk plz let me know thnx.

Hi tactix, welcome to the forums 🙂 Nice to see lots of UK fellas recently...
'Fraid I can't be much help on the small pannel projectors, I jumped straight in at the deep end with a 15" BenQ. Don't people use 5" PSone screens?
Finding parts in the UK is a bit tricky, there doesn't appear to be any local online stores aimed at this hobby - You should be able to source everything seperately though. Small fresnel lenses (look under 'page magnifiers') can be had; industrial electrical outlets should sort you out with MH lamps and ballast; the projection lens will be a bit trickier though, you'll probably have to cannabalise a decent broken OHP to get a triplet.
I took the lazy route and imported everything from diylabs.org 🙂

Yes mate, I ordered:
- 250w light kit (IceCap electronic ballast, bulb and FC2 lamp holders)
- Light Upgrade Kit (Reflector & Condensor)
- Fresnel Lens Set (15.5")
- 80mm Projection Triplet
[/list=1]
The owner of the store is a nice guy, very happy to help but a little overworked by the sounds of it 😉 Unfortunately I got hit on import duties because it came via a courier, but you might be lucky and get away with it if you try AirMail instead. It wasn't cheap, but I knew I'd end up with good quality stuff that people are familiar with.
Think ill go to bowlers for my TFT and other bits
(bowlers is a massive computer fair up here in manchester, saturday 11am - 4pm... aparrantly europes largest market, s**t loada stalls though, some sell dodgy TFT's and bits n bobs)

Cheers for the replies guys.
Scrap my first idea i showed the missus the quality of the slide projector ps2 pad mod and she didnt like it at all.
And for the money it was gonna cost to get a ps2 hip pad shipped to the uk i could goto my local comp fair "dunstall race course wolverhampton" and pick up a cheep lcd.
So i put the idea to her indoors lol.
She loved the look of a 15" build " and she says it will keep me out of her hair hmmmm"
We have been looking about for a pj for ages for movie weekends with the kids but was always put of bye the price of comecial bulbs and there short life. Let alone the price of a good pj
As from what ive seen there there are 2 ways i can go.
A ohp setup. Whats the quality and noise like with a ohp ?
Or a total homebuild
I like the look of the mk3 homebuild, and it should be easyer to find space for.
Im gonna need a setup with atleast a min of 9 foot throw.
What sort of screen sizes can i expect from this distance?
I can source a fair few parts localy for the mk3 ie : balast cap bulbs fittings fresnels optics so i hope to keep the cost below £200
the only thing i cant get is a condensor.
so gotta choose between ohp or mk3 any opinions would be great. cuz i dont wanna spend out on something im not gonna be pleased with .
till then it's back trawling the forum
thnx once again

Hi,
Not having a condensor isn't the end of the world, you'll still see decent results on a 15" setup.
Image size depends up 3x things: Throw distance, pannel size and projection lens focal length.
With a 15" pannel and the commonly used 330mm projection lens you're looking at roughly 1:1 throw to image size, so a 9 to 10foot 4:3 screen. Just about right I'd think 😎
Personally I wouldn't advise the OHP route if you have the time and parts available to build a custom box. OHP selection can be a pain (ideally you want a triplet not a common cheaper doublet lens), fitting the LCD on the stage can be problematic as well as quiet cooling.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

cheers quin for ya advice
Im gonna go with the home build started.
Ive started sourcing some parts today so will start a new thread with pics when i start the project
And ive found a local place to get the mdf and they will cut all the enclosure panels for me at no extra cost
So gonna get that built soon once ive got some of the rest of the parts here.
