Harry Partch is certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But this composition is brilliant, the recording is excellent and the performance is stellar. Dave Barron does a superb job on the vocal, but the Kronos Quartet is simply unbelievable. I doubt any quartet has surpassed this level of execution in all history. I felt like Jody Foster in "Contact," dazed and in awe muttering, "I had no idea." And I've been listening to string quartets for 45 years.
We heard an ensemble that specializes in Partch's music last night at Disney recital hall. They brought out his "Marimba Eroica" - over 800 lbs of very low frequency rumble. Performance was exceptional with super work from the bunch of percussionists.
If you think great music ended with Mahler, not for you.
I've also commented on this marimba in the subwoofer forum.
