Noise Reduction

OHP's make a lot of noise! At least my Elmo HP-A305 does. Has anyone tried to tackle the noise problem? I'll probably build a cabinet for my setup and maybe I can incorporate some noice reduction material into it... but at the same time I don't want to insulate it and cause more heat than necessary to be trapped inside!

I hear ya, My 305 sounds like a jet starting up when I trun it on, plus all the light that leaks out the fan holes.
I'm first going to just try making an extension for the fan inlet/outlets A "Muffler" if you will, a tube with a 90* turn, than about 15", than 180*turn,than another 15", lined with some dampening material. May have to replace the fans with some whisper type fans.

3M 9550 is a quiet OHP, maybe you can get same/similar fan as it has? You might get away with a smaller or slower fan if you make up an internal "ducting" system to direct air better (I don't know the internals you have now with your Elmo's)

Funny story...bought a "fan upgrade" if you will for when I was planning to use 400 watt MH lamps...)the big ones 11 inchs long ones) Well this fan I bought comes from Princess auto ...surpluss fan...very slick unit all cast aluminum 6 inch fan. With a "venturi" shape to it's bore. I bring it home and wire it up with marr connectors and a cord switch. Flick the switch and the darn thing starts creeping along...wiirrrr..it gains speed....LOTS of speed...it keeps gaining speed till it blows itself over! Sounds like a JET! No clue on it's top end RPM but I know it moves enough air to "hover" itself...this is no easy task...it weighs about 1.5 pounds. It's too loud to use anywhere near a human or critter...but too "neat to play with" to take it back.

The moral of this story? Don't buy a fan till you hear it run, if at all possible 😉

Almost forgot...I also bought a long "squirel cage" type fan to cool my panel. Perfect size, couldnt ask for better dimensions.....also loud. So I buy a two place ceiling fan speed controller....DOH! neither fan likes to be speed controlled. I'll use all this junk someplace....

Sollution to the panel cooling? Back to princess auto bought 2 little 3.5 inch long squirel cages 24 volts DC. I run them on 12 volts from the computers power supply....whisper quiet and a VERY cool panel.

zardoz... slowly learns from his mistakes 😉

I can't believe this subject(too much noise!?!)

Just have to say that my old portascribe has got to be the loudest piece of crap (but good for cooling) of any projector made
anyways I am surprised you don't just turn up your sound(you do have surround, don't you)
My pc also has some 10 fans including the cpu, and mainboard fans, so I slowly am getting used to fan noise.
anyways the reason I think this subject is stupid(the second reason is I can't afford a MH Elmo OH) is because I LOVE the sound of fans cooling, I don't have to worry about something burning my precious panel up(have you seen how much sharp qa panels are going for on ebay someone must be smoking something to pay 400-not canadian either- for a sharp 2500
might be time for you to build your own box, I saw this site that blew me away dude had a 4 foot box made of wood and his setup rocked.

anyways if it's too loud your too old(J/K LOL)
I didn't fail to plan, I just like having extra junk around)

hmm let's see...yes I have surround sound...yes I can drown out the sounds of my cooling fans...I can wake up the neighbours down the street..I can also wake up my kids ...or my wife when I'm late nighting it watching the matrix or pearl harbour. So whats the point? LOUD does not always mean GOOD...about all the 2 words have in common is an o in second spot and a d at the end.

Loud might not always be ok(I agree)

Just followup to Zardoz's distaste for my opinion, I can agree that loud isn't always ok, that's why I posted the link to that sweet homebuilt box, anyways Zardoz I hope you don't think I'm being disrespectful, as your quote about every 2 words I have no idea what you really meant, nothing personal, I like my fans on and will accomidate my sound around them.
so to stay on track with the subject, you could try buying some PVC pipe with an angle to baffle the sound if quiet is your goal also.

Have you seen that box on the link? It looks like a coffin for a midget. I mean the builder no disrespect, he built what he envisioned. I envision something a little more "estheticly pleasing" my projection room for now is a little small. I have to live with my wife and family around this machine. When I was in the army it would be just fine to have the "mini coffin" (as I've come to know it) in the barracks, but not in my living room.

" as your quote about every 2 words I have no idea what you really meant" lOuD does not equal gOoD No offence taken, but if a quiet machine is important to someone...and is a goal they hope to achieve then no one in this membership has the right to say "this subject is stupid". If you ask me, which I know you haven't 😉 ....if you are the first person to build a "absolutely" quiet projector you will have achieved a milestone.

Personally my machine is "in flux" at the moment so it's final design is undecided (I have some really cool stuff on the way 😉 )

gregory27 must be the person that sits behind you at the theaters, and talks thoughout the movie, kicking your seat.
Why would you want to stop people from making their home theater better?
I mean come on don't tell me you wouldn't like it better without all the added noise, you probably like tapes better than CD's too, No offence. LOL

I would never kick someones seat!!!

Just wanted to reply to the rudeness bestowed upon my saying quiet was stupid, I would never talk or kick someone's seat in a movie theatre(with 3 kids I'd be lucky to see 1 movie this year), and because you made this comment I trust that someone will bring a 2 year old child to your next movie and distract you to the point you will regret making assumptions, I shouldn't have said stupid, but my opinion is that a loud fan is working and a quiet fan could die, heat kills your device and you are simply SOL
again Zardoz has made a valid point of making a quiet DIY projector and I do have respect for your opinion, just don't agree with it, now go buy some overpriced components, and be coool!!!
(heck last night I wouldn't have needed a fan, just open the door and 14 below would cool the OH)
😉

yeah no rudeness allowed

I only stated my point on a members quest and gregory27 responded well to my sharpness, I give him credit (I can come off as a little quick at times) but he took my shot with the "direct and to the point" that was intended. Salute! (I allways salute a fella that sticks his chin out for the shot when he bought it...hehe...I stick my chin out a lot it seems 😉 )

Anything further to run this stand up fella (g27) down is going to be looked on poorly 😎
