no0bie.. need help with project

Hi,

I've been reading a lot of posts from diyAudio.com .. but I still have some questions.

I want to build a Pico Projector as shown in diyprojectorcompany.com, but when i add all the parts that I need.. the expense seems unreasonable

psone(5" lcd) - $50 - ebay
250w HQI Metal Halide Kit - $160 - DiyProjectorcompany
Long-Throw Kit w/ triplet 135 - $158 - DiyProjectorcompany
60mm Condenser Lens - $13 - DiyProjectorcompany
4.75" Circular Cold Mirror - $7 - DiyProjectorcompany

I'm already at $388 !!!.... not including shipping charges!
I wanted to spend more money on the actual lcd rather than the rest.

My Q1:
Is PsOne LCD worth the money? .. I'm looking for good quality picture on a 48" screen

Q2:
is there a cheaper light source i could use that would produce reasonable results? ..or could you recomend a cheaper place to buy HQ Metal Halide?

Q3:
Could you recoment some other similar lense for this project?

Thank you all for your help

Sonny

I have seen pepole use 75w car head lights, 300w round
flood lights, and even big lamp / ballast metal halid that are
cheap $30-40 for the lamp $60 for the ballast, used with
the psone screen - and work well

Is PsOne LCD worth the money? .. I'm looking for
good quality picture on a 48" screen

It would look ok at 48 inch - but not mutch more,
nice lcd tho - I have one on my bathroom wall
to watch tv :devilr:

what I would do is make a wood box
and just do a strait line - no mirrors

triplet-----LCD----Frensnel------light

you can find cheap used triplets $30-40 or get a used OHP
for $30 and strip it - make shure its got a triplet first

You will need a IR/UV filter - I herd the PSone
lcd dont like UV and IR :hot:

search in the Forums its been done a lot

super cheap PS1 projector

There is no reason to get expensive lenses or high power light sources with the PS1 LCD: You need those to get a bigger image, but then you will be bothered by the low resolution of the LCD. Settle for a smaller image, and you can do it for $60-120.

The key is to find a cheap used OHP at a local yard sale or business equipment surplus shop. $10 is not impossible! (DO NOT get a reflective type.) Even if it uses a duplet, that should be fine. The PS1 screen is smaller than an OHP's transparency area, so it will have no problem giving you a nice clear image. You can just put the PS1 screen in a DIY frame and set it on the OHP. Maybe add a bit of fan cooling between the LCD and the OHP surface, if it gets too hot. Like they did on Tom's Hardware website.

If you want a brighter image, change to a MH lamp. You can get the cheapest 4200 K 250 Watt bulb with ballast for about $60 US. You can move all the parts to a DIY fiberboard box, if you want something that looks nicer. Get some wood-grain contact paper, and you have something that can pass for furniture when its off.

See if you can find a CRT projector lens - they sell some at surplusshed for like $15 and they will give better results, much more brightner/efficient results when compared to the expensive light kit, and they dont need a front fresnel!

Sorry for the late reply.. been out of town for a bit..

I went to best buy today.. got a hip gear for 29$ canadian... I know its only 2.5"... but its cheap! 🙂

I also bought an old slide projector from a garage sale for $10..

but i found out it was missing a lense when the hip gear screen started going black

.. not sure which lense i am missing.. i'm confused between a condenser lense and Frensnel lense.. i'll need to do some more reading

will1384@ .. you said not to use mirrors?.. how come?

Thank you all for your help

you might wanna make your own custom enclosure instead of the slide projector. The only thing that is wrong witht the slide projector is that the bulb is old and usuall doesnt last long. Lucky you your best buy had it. mine didnt.

i say make a custom enclose and use

light source--ir-heat glass---frenel-lcd-crt lens

that shoudl give you a pretty nice image.

but you will see a good amount of pixels if you make the image too big

cheapest MH setup

250 Watt MH bulb for $14.53 US:

http://www.1000bulbs.com/product.php?product=548

magnetic ballast kit to go with it for $ 46.68 US:

http://www.1000bulbs.com/product.php?product=799

This is for a 4200 K large bulb. Not ideal for projection, but much better than long Halogen tubes. You can use it with a mixing bowl reflector. 10000 hour life, 17000 average lumens.

You can save shipping money if you can find a ballast nearby so you can pick it up, since they are quite heavy.

Be careful !!

"but i found out it was missing a lense when the hip gear screen started going black"

If the screen is going black (kinda like a big black circle growing bigger) that definitely is HEAT !!! :HOT: turn the thing off as soon as you start seeing that, or you'll fry the lcd. I think you're either missing the heat glass (hot mirror) or a cold mirror.

Use the CRT lens, great brightness, and good throw distance.

Thank you everyone here for giving me advice..
I finally got the 2.5 inch projection working..

the first time .. when i was taking the lcd apart.. the paper thin lcd wire cut off... so i went and bought another one and tried it.. with a borrowed slide projector.. .got horrible results..

going to try with a 5" lcd from a psone instead now
