No tuner on HK 330c

The good news and the bad news -

I recently replaced the lamps and the power indicator light on a Harmon/Kardon 330c receiver. I thought everything went well, I polished up the tuner face, turned it on and everything looked great.

But now no tuner. There is no sound at all on AM, FM or FM stereo. The tuning meter doesn't move at all. The tuner needle moves freely up and down the dial.

Putting a CD player through Aux works fine.

The tuner worked fine before my "refurb". Doh!

The only thing I did to the tuner, and maybe it wasn't so smart, was to put some Caig ProGold contact enhancer on the tuner fins. The Progold works really well on interconnects, so I looked at all the fins on the tuner, and thought, gee that looks like metal to metal contanct, maybe Progold can enhance that. But, I only put on a little.

Any thoughts on how I can refurb my refurb?

Thanks,

Jim B

😱 Ach! I made the same mistake myself on a Scott 355R receiver. The tuner does not make contact, but, if I remember correctly, uses capacitance. The cleaning fluid is probably throwing off the tuning (changing the value of the “capacitor”), so try to dry it out. I would not use a cotton-swab, as then you run the risk of bending the fins and really throwing things out of whack; try using the edges of paper towel. Also, the spray (although not conductive itself) could have made the “dirt” conductive enough to become like a resistor where one may be detrimental to tuning.

Again, try drying it out and that should help. But with my Scott, it was still a month before it would tune correctly.

Nice to hear from you, Mjarve. I was pretty proud of myself for being able to splice an new power indicator light in. But then, no tuner!

I will take you advice. Maybe I will spray some compressed air on it to speed the drying. I'll be careful not to bend any fins.

Thanks,

Jim B
