NO matter how many times I read about grounding

.....I am still confused especially when I add in an umbilical!

In the attached the top plate is copper and the chassis is wood in the main chassis; the whole chassis is aluminum in the PS chassis.

I want to know where best to situate the star ground point so as to gain maximum benefit?

Am I correct in grounding the IEC on the PS chassis and running a separate ground wire through the umbilical to a star ground in the main chassis?

Thanks

IMO, it does not really matter if your star grounding point is in the PSU or Main chassis as long as both chasis are connected to each other through the chassis ground. The amp does not have that much of a gain as compare to say a preamp.

I have used two chassis approach for two of my preamps( a type 26 and a type 76). Here is what I learned wiring them and I use three wires on the umbilical for carrying the GND on this scheme.

I had the star ground point at the main preamp chassis not on the PSU chassis. From the PSU chassis the IEC GND and the HV (or "0" gnd from the rectification circuit) are separately transported to the main preamp chassis by two wires then connects to the star ground. The signal ground from the main chassis connects to the star ground of the main chassis as well. Lastly, from the star ground, use another wire from the umbilical (the third one) then transport it back to the PSU chassis. Connect this wire to the box of the PSU chassis. This arrangement makes the GND of the IEC, "0" volt, signal, and chassis ground to meet at one and only one point: The star ground point at the main preamp chassis.

Hope it works for you.

amandarae,

Thank you so much for giving a clear explanation and example of what to do. I shall follow it to the letter.

Any particular location on the main chassis for the star ground? Close to where the power comes in? Close to the OTL's? I plan on using a bolt so need to identify the location so I can add it to my frontpanelexpress layout.

PS arrives on the 10th - soooo excited as this is the last part to arrive 🙂

If there's room, I put my star ground anchor in the middle of the chassis, or as close to the input tube as possible. You can also place it closest to the input RCA's if possible. Otherwise, choose a place where there's a space convenient for you to work on.
