No Bottom Line - Perversity - In Audio

Stumbled upon this one today, which of course I find fascinating. The ridiculous, for what possible purpose could someone undertake such a construction?

20 Of the Most Expensive Amplifiers In the World – Aperion Audio

TL;DR: the top of the heap is a 2.2 million $ amplifier, with 6 channels of 20KW Class A amplification. Why? What possible use case? To put in a museum?

At least the automobiles and airplanes at this expenditure level you could actually drive, and fly. Looking at these "perverse" creations almost makes me sick to even be loosely associated - that's more like a disease than a hobby or activity.

If any one of them somehow dropped from the sky into my lap, I wouldnt even turn it on - I'd sell it immediately and take the money; whatever I could get.

Comments? Isnt it ridiculous?

Another inexplicable thread here. Cannot keep a count anymore.

Still, feeling good for knowing well two of the designers from that list and having listened extensively to at least four of the amps.

Can only feel grateful for the inspiration.

Obviously it's 10X the parts cost and 20X labor!

I dont think any of them had digital inputs... One would think something like "Dante" would be high enough end, where I assume your amplifier is just another node on an Ethernet.

A serious question though, at what upper price point range does an amp, pair of loudspeakers or turntables etc start to drop drastically in sales if any such sales "knee" exists, ie how far would presumptive customers be willing to splurge on "high end" even if they could afford for a lot more?
