Hi All,
I have been reading this form with great intrest and have decided to attempt my own DIY projector. I have access to almost any type of Toshiba laptop LCD display. I was hoping someone could or would recomend one. I was thinking a 7.1" LCD from a Toshiba Libretto would be ideal for its small size. Any comments on this?

Here's some quick specs I have found off of the net. My current supply consists of a few larger screens...most of them are cracked(good for testing with and playing around but I am working on getting some screens with bad FL tubes in them. Screens are still good just no backlite which isn't needed in this application as i'm sure you are aware.
Here are some specs from a Toshiba libretto 110:
Display: 7.1" SVGA Active Matrix (800 x 480), 16.7 million colors (24 bit color). Neo Magic 2160 MagicGraph 128 bit with 2MB Video RAM. Support for external display at 64k colors and 800 x600 and 1024x768 resolutions via VGA port

Toshiba screen
Heya there Tazz welcome to the forum, the laptop screens at 7.1inch i think are pasive matrix cos i think they are off of old laptops, if im wrong just make sure u get a resolution of atleast 640 by 480 pixels for dvd and tv and for comp, but i recomend a minimum of 800 by 600 pix and make sure its an ative matrix screen, hey and if u are interested in selling one or 2 im a buyer too lol.
Cheers Trev

Wont you need some controllers for these screen if they are laptop? I really know nothing about laptop lcds and contollers, but there are some that range abbout $199 @ earthlcd.com. If you needed one, it seems it would be cheaper to go out and buy the NEC 1545V 15" lcd monitor.
Yes you would need a controller, and I'll continue to defend the use of laptop screens and controllers.
If you strip down an LCD monitor and screw up one of the ribbon cables...the whole project is in the trash can...at least the most expensive part.
If I toast a panel all I have to do is get another...my controll gear is still intact.
I can select from a ton of different panels to connect to my controller from TTL panels to LVDS panels.
Sizes from 10.4", 12.1, 13.3, 14, 15, 17 and 18 inch panels.
Resolutions from 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024.
Will handle panels from almost ALL major manufacturers.
The biggest hurdle I have is to get the spec sheets for the panel you want to use, then to have the contoller people make you a cable (or pull from stock) Allternatively if you could find a source of supply for the cable ends you could make them yourself (I'm lazy...get them made for me).
The second "caveat" for me is the fact that my LCD controller only has 8 megs of video ram on it...just fine for DVD's and TV and surfing...but not so hot for "fast" games.
All in all I'm VERY pleased with my setup..looking to up-grade to and LVDS screen but not going to agonize over it.

Laptop Screens
Yeah i would second zardoz and with laptop lcd's they use cables not the flimsy circut that is in one peice with a normal lcd so they are more flexible to aply in aplications like u could make cables so the controler is away 1 meter if u want from the lcd for an example, with a normal screen imposible without screwing it up, so in the Short run u pay for the controler but u have the versitility in the long run and also interchangable parts to match, ive pulled a laptop lcd out apart before and they are so easy to work with compared to the desctop type of lcd.

Here is a link to the company I deal with http://www.spectrah.com/product.htm
I use the LD S270M
I don't know what their policy is on "one off's" from individuals, I fall into the market of "system integrator" or "OEM" so can order from them direct. I've offered to do a "group buy" for the forum before but have not recieved any GENUINE responces. To make that happen I would need the following.
The adapter required by the member (model number)
The spec sheet for the members intended panel ( a MUST)
The cable length wished (if applicable)
The members money (I'm not rich enough to go out on a limb)
The members trust and understanding that...
I WILL NOT MAKE PROFIT, NOR WILL I SUFFER LOSS ( I will be totaly "transparent with the costs..anyone involved will get a copy of the total sales info and such). Also the fact that this is shipping from Taiwan...it's expensive to do piece by piece (so should be a bulk order...any suggestions on a minimum?)
Seeing as it comes from Taiwan it takes time shipping wise ( It was a BAD time for me... the long wait, it would be worse for members involved in a bulk buy (arrival here at my location...broken down and re-sent..possibly through a state it's allready been through 🙁 ) My wait was something like 11 days if I recall (ship day to arrival)
But the upside is the late shipping got me FREE SHIPPING!!! from Taiwan to Nova Scotia Canada for that transaction 😎

zardoz,
Are there any laptop screens sold on ebay that will work with an lvds motherboard?
Which lcd screen did you buy?

Hellow!
This is the first post I make here. I'm a Belgian student who's trying to make his own projector. I have found a build in 12,1'' tft screen which I want to use for my LCD projector.
Here you can find all technical info about the screen. Can you guys check this screen and tell me if I can use this one? Thx in advance and sorry for my poor English!
