Greetings everyone! I plan on "building" my own projector, but I decided to start by doing something simple to get my feet wet. I figured that I could get a used OHP off of ebay for around $50. I read that OHP should have an output of 4000 lumens to be effective, but other users have made do out of OHP with a lower output. Then I ran into this page : http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/other/article_ohp_retrofit.htm
So I could pretty much get any ol' OHP and upgrade the lights and lenses.
I was planning on using a projection panel, but I'm not so sure. All of the panels on ebay are kinda crappy. Please give me some suggestions on what I should do! Thanks.

Okay, for that guy's first setup, it looks like he has a stripped LCD on an OHP. He also has two fans mounted to the side for cooling.
I don't know much about wiring or electrical work, but how does he connect the LCD and fans to the PSU? From the pictures, it looks that he connected the red wires with the red and the black wires with the black and capped them off with connectors.

If I just get a regular OHP and outfit it with new lenses and change the lighting, I could have the benefits of a homemade projector without much adjusting. Then if I decide to change my setup I could take out the lenses and the lighting system and put them into a box.
Again, I do not know much about lights or anything for that matter. I just learned what a ballast is yesterday.
I'm supposing that stripping an LCD panel is better than using an old projection panel. Give me some more feedback and help! Thanks and have a nice day!

see the lcd has its own power supply i used a old computer power supply for the computer fans so i didnt have to actualy wire them since they all have connectors for use with the computer powersupply and yes yer right id start with a normal OHP and iether get a good OHP panel or strip a lcp .... but be prepaired to eat the lcd if you break it during striping ... .... my cat jumped on
mine and killed it .. so i went and got a decent OHP panel a sharp 1800 does 16.7 million colors .. same as a lcd monitor and it does 800x600 with isnt great but its ok for a OHP panel im happy with it with my current light setup if i had a nice MH setup id really be wanting to strip a lcd ... now if you do get a OHP and strip a lcd or get a ohp panel ... then later you wanna upgrade you could use the lens and fresnel out of the OHP and of course the lcd ...
but i wouldnt go useing the light source out of it ......the point to building yer own box is to add better light source and be able to control light leaks wich is the biggest problem with the OHP panel setup

Would any psu work with computer fans? I have a couple of 12v 8cm computer fans, but I don't know if they would work on just a psu. I though the psu needed to be connected to a motherboard.
