I searched around briefly and didn't find anything really, so I'm sorry if this is oft repeated.

My parent's 55 inch rear project SDTV is on the fritz, and they have a budget of 2000 to replace it. I was wondering if there is anything I could make for 1500-2000 that would be able to project a 60"-80" image at 20 feet or so away?

16:9 and possible HDTV are a definite plus.

Anything possible?

With that kind of budget, yes, you can make one to your spec. In fact, you could probably make 3 or 4 of them with 2000.
If your folks are going to use it as their regular TV, the image during daytime is not as good. Most of the results that are post in this forum, they were shot at night or in a dark room, they look really good.

I think to make a projector for yourself is a very good idea, but to make one for someone else, ie friends or parents could be more trouble then its worth. If your parents buy a new tv from the shops and anything go's wrong they can return it or have it fixed under the warenty/garuntee but if you make them a projector and it stops working its down to you to fix it. I know it sounds like it wouldnt be a big problem, but its allways best to expect the worst.

sorry to be negative 😛

From a non-technical point of view, I have to agree with atsnom.
But another reason not to do it as a replacement is because, to me, projectors should only be an addition to your TV. Like if I want to watch a movie on a big screen at night with my family, then that's good, but I wouldn't replace my regular TV with the projector. But then, that's just me 🙂
But technically speaking, yes, you can make one under $500.

Well

Well I was hoping to make a projector to replace their current TV that would be able to be bright during the day and night and I was hoping that a large budget would allow this, however it may not be physically possible 😉

On the other hand, it probably is best to just advise them to get a rear projection TV. I just looked at a lot of them and thought that the picture quality was subpar due to the edges being less bright.

Also our old SDTV went out of calibration and I don't want to have to deal with that anymore. I did hte convergance wizard many times but it only had a setting for the middle of the screen and the edges went to pot.

under budget

I think they could get a great DLP-based rear-projection TV for much less than $2000, if they can find a good discount store or club warehouse. I saw some nice ones at Costco and was amazed at the low prices. These are very bright, and they have no convergence issues. If they are not members at Costco or Sam's, it might be worthwhile to join for a year just to get the TV.

I am all for DIY fun, but I would not build a projector for somebody else to use on a daily basis. This stuff is more like building a dune buggy on an old VW frame: You parents should probably just "buy the SUV".
