FE206EN (stock - no filters) sounds great in a Karlson 12 original and smaller ~1.9 cubic foot external bulk K-coupler cabinet. Hope FE166EN is restocked soon for several upcoming K-coupler projects.

Zia,
If you are very serious about en driver with BiB cab pls tell me so. I will run the calculation and compare with yours. Pls note locally available ply is not 18mm rather 17 mm so in inch it should be closer to .7. Also note when building cab I prefer slightly larger than cal dimention because of three reasons 1 drivers change spec after burnin/over time, for fostex specially factory quoted Vas and Total Q are conservative last and most important you can damp a over size box, can not do the opposite.
If you feel you can call me I will be glad to stand with you at your friend's service

Thank you Minhaj and you are forever the perfectionist... first drivers and now ply board - nothing escapes your eagle eye 🙂
I got my hands on some "Marine Grade Ply" - and according to my measurement this is 18mm (unfortunately I do not have slide calipers, got ruler only 🙂). The material is much stiffer and heavier vs standard "decorative ply". It's made in India by Evergreen (an Indian brand) I think. The boards are made of Garjan, which is a hard wood. I was planning to buy standard ply boards when I came across a post from ChrisB where he explcitly advised against the use of standard ply boards. At first people gave me funny looks when I was asking about 11 layer ply board but managed to get the message through eventually.
I was planning to round off the internal dimensions and do the build - that should give me slightly larger box dimension, right? Another forum member sent me some cutting plans for 8' x 4' boards - he's recently done a FE166En BiB build and loves them. I you propose larger cab larger by how much?
BTW, I am still waiting for the drivers (now ETA probably mid March). Will give you a buzz.

Thanks Zia for the nice words. Nowadays personally I am not much interested in BLH designs be it hedlund or BiB or something else. One day I am sure you will come and join the camp of front loaded horns which is now my dreamland.
Right now I do not have any FLH systems, I am preparing to build some. I am trying to gather enough knowledge and fund to start my project. This will be real expensive for me.
Get your driver and pls let me know we will run the numbers together. Meanwhile pls look for measured spec, for example, like this one, Fostex FE206E Fullrange Loudspeaker Driver then you do not need to cut your ply any larger. Otherwise you may go by 1''x.1'' for sure.
However to my knowledge Austin166 is the best cabinet for older fe166e driver period. But 166en is ok with this or not I dono. Dave from planet 10 may know. Pls note Austin 166 is much complex to construct.
Pls give me a call I am loving it.
Regards
It is excellent that you have sourced marin ply usually it is void free. Where is it available in Dhaka? What is the cost for 8'x4' sheet?

Zia I am sorry I forgot to tell you. Pls use phase plug with your 166, planet10 have them. Or get the measurement from planet 10 (I think Dave would not mind) and ask your carpenter to make a pair. Be very very careful when you cut the dust cap. I have cut some dustcap successfully I can help you do so.

The new fostex drivers i have measured fall within the same envelope as the old, so i figure they are safe to use in all the old cabinets. I haven't gotteb enuff data to really tell, but i have a hunch the consistency is not as high as i'm having to use more dtivers to get pairs close enuff matched to make me happy.

Thanks Dave, I think all the builders will be benefited from your input.
Dave, sometimes i feel like building a small set of speakers using old 103 with alnico mag. Do you have any, if yes what is the price for a pair? Thanks.

Minhaj,
I got the marine grade ply from M.R. Traders located at Karwan Bazaar. Price of 8' x 4' sheet is BDT. 3800/-. There are 11 layers in the 3/4" board.

I might have 3 decent ones. And lots of bad ones. Typically these fetch $75/pr, but i'd likely sell for less. Have to find thm thou... there is a guy in Italy (?) who has probably given up on me getting back to him on those.

Built "most" of the BIB cabs yesterday. Now I need to cut the hole in the front baffle for the the drivers and double up for on front and rear (the boards are cut and ready).
Sincerely thank everybody for their inputs. It was fun doing this!

Screws for attaching removable front panel of BIB
Picked this up from a hardware store - 1/2" hex insert and 2" screw - thinking of using these for fixing the removable front panel of my BIB cabs. That way I don't have to be worried about any wear and tear on the screw holes resulting from taking the panel off and fitting it back again multiple times (for damping adjustment).
My front panel is 1.5" thick because of using 2 layers. Back is also 1.5" thick and fixed.
Any harm in this approach?

Zia, congratualations.
1/2'' insert is no good cause load is on a small area. For 1.5'' thick buffle you need 2.5'' good quality wood srews. Adjustment of damping material is a bit difficult but possible through the driver hole.

May I interject.
Screwing into the end grain of plywood (and even worse in MDF) is never a good idea. Using threaded inserts will work much better than plain wood screws. 6mm(or 1/4") bolts should work fine in this application. I have no idea what is available to you in Dhaka, but at least here, longer inserts are available and you should use the longest inserts you can get.
If you do it right, the bolts could easily be your final finish. I would use Allen head (hex head) cap screws, and if counter sunk, they would look very nice.
Bob
Minhaj, thank you 🙂. After making one cab I feel like making more!
Bob,
Thanks for your inputs. 1/2" insert is the longest I have found in Dhaka. Another way can be, I make a deeper hole and screw in 2 inserts (one after the other)- that way I get around an inch inside of the ply. Not the best solution, but maybe better than 1 insert only?
The screws are 6mm, and I can get both 2" and 2.5" lengths.
How many should I use? Cab width 11" and height 64.5".

I don't think that you can stack the inserts -- you will never get the threads to line up. I'd put the bolts every 15cm or so. However long you make the bolts, make sure that the bolts don't bottom out in the holes. That can cause the inserts to strip out.

Bob
Thanks Bob. 15 cm distance between screws means roughly 10-11 screws per side of the removable front panel for this build.
Will be setting inserts an extra 2-3 mm deeper so that screws don't bottom out.

Bob, thanks for your advice. in my application, for one time fix, I use wood screw and wood glue regularly without any problem. However this is different application and and I will remember this should I need to do like this (removeability).
Zia pls tell us how does it sound when you are finished. A small note, there is always room for amp upgrade like better filter cap, better coupling cap etc. Once you are done with your BiB you may like to look into this.
Wish you may excell in your persuit.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Minhaj. Now I eagerly await my drivers. Once I install them and finish the build, I will get to the music and share my listening impressions. Whatever the case, my friend is not getting this pair anytime soon 😀.
