Newbie looking for first project advice

Hahaha I know what you mean, man. Here's an idea. Have your buddy make you some classy grills to cover up the speakers. Or use it as a center channel or in another project. Or like you said, half price it, I'm sure it'll go quickly. I'm actually looking to pick up another driver, if you want to shoot me some pics and a price maybe I'll take it off your hands for you.

You're absolutely right, with the back being removable there really is no way to properly couple the front and back of the enclosure without making a permanent bond. I may just have to change up my bracing to try and work around this problem.

If you want to retain ability to remove the panel, a few screws into the vertical brace should provide sufficient coupling. Of course once you're confident in the fill levels of damping materials, you could always glue the back panel in place. Use moisture cured PUR ( Gorilla) glue's expansion characteristics to compensate for any loose fit on the cleats and brace and clamp thoroughly overnight.

That's some luck about your cat. Hopefully it's just cosmetic damage. Even if it is I'd still replace the driver due to me being a perfectionist. Hahahaha. Anyways, keep us informed how it comes together as you break them in and find the right amount of stuffing.
puts a lie to the joke about "big cats being dangerous, but a little ..... never hurt anybody" of course any married guy long since knew that 😉

That is not true, If it were you might as well say that there is no way to properly secure the back to the box. In our P7 build a half dozen (or so) screws into the holey brace does a fine job. Not as good as glue. Once the stuffing is sorted i'd be sorely temped to glue the back on, brace or not.

Hindsight is 20/20. I realized where I went wrong as soon as I posted it but was too lazy to correct myself. Thanks for all who've done so for me. I just wish there was a standard amount of filling that's needed for each enclosure. I'm the kind of guy who likes the "Set it and forget it" method. Removing the back panel and adjusting the proper amount of stuffing over and over is just another thing to pull my hair out about. I see that it says start with .75ft^3 and adjust from there. Well that leaves an infinite amount of adjustability, if you ask me. Sorry for the rant.

It should only take a couple of iterations of adjustment to get the fill dialed in for your taste. Don't obsess over getting it perfect - there's (probably?) no such thing and some of us get more than a bit OCD about things.

If you wanted a set and forget system, you could always try a Bose Wave Radio - you could certainly forget about emotionally engaging music - sorry I couldn't resist. Sorry, gotta go, the lawyers are at the door

That's harsh. I definitely have OCD when it comes to getting it right. Oh well, I'll just hack away at it until it suits my musical expectations. Now, to start a build log I must do.

oops, I forgot the smilie to indicate a jest - Bose products are simply one of my favorite targets for derision (safer than getting personal with speaker builders), and no insult intended to those with ADHD / OCD / Asberger's or such - none of which I'm sure are a laughing matter for any involved

whether or not I have a disorder, I have obsessively worked on this system and I now compulsively stare at that little 1" dent in what was otherwise a perfectly beautiful speaker.

this is just going to drive me insane until I drop another $110 on replacing it.
Building a center channel might just be the thing...

On to the grills: I ordered two of these kits. I wish I had designed the grill into the speaker so that everything was flush... oh well.
Wish I could show off the drivers without having cat (or drunk human) damaging them.

Interesting kit. I too need a failsafe for my speakers. The first thing my girlfriend did when I opened up the box to show her was reach for the speaker so she could push on it. Luckily I have cat like reflexes and a glare that can kill. She quickly got the message. I too have drunk human friends, and I definitely foresee some touching unless I put up some grills. Or barbed wire. 😀
