Hi there,
I have a nothing special aiwa hifi:
retail code - nsx-22
model code - cx-ns22k
serial code - s01w7c10367
which i got ages ago and cd player stopped recognising cds soon after the warranty ran out. what happens is it takes the cd in it spins it 3 times, and then gives up and tries another cd (3cd drawer)
anyway at that time i was moving over to mp3 cd-rs anyway so bought a new stereo, but recently ive taken on a workshop to complete in-house domestic appliance repairs and thought id have a bash at fixing this to use for my music as opposed to shelling out for a new stereo.
so yes, even after one of those cheap and nasty cd lens cleaners, it still wont recognise a cd. after doing a bit of research and poking about with it ive noted the laser to be a kss213b. i also noted theres supposed to be an adjustment screw fitted to align the laser, i dont know where this is and is this likely to be viable or is the laser knackered? has anyone any tips or info on recalibrating it, or should i just screw and hope? Also if i need to replace it hows the best way to attempt it?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
There are NO adjustments needed on the pickup. The small preset is factory set to calibrate laser power... do NOT alter.
New pickups do have a small "shorting link" which is a little blob of solder that should be removed when fitted... with a static free low leakage soldering iron (one that is grounded).
There are adjustments on the main PCB but in 95% of times the pickup will work perfectly well without any adjustment to these.
Fitting is easy... just remove the rail and lift out. Spindle motors also wear and can cause problems.
