Newbie, Gainclone HT RX w/ HDMI?

Hi - Been an occasional visior here for a while now, have to say the knowledge-base on this forum is second to none in the field. Long story short, I can finally afford to set up a decent home theatre system, and the only part I don't have is a decent audio receiver. Here's the catch - I want clean, stereo audio - everything else can be modern, but call it whatever you will, 2.0 or 2.1 in a modern age is what I'm after...

I plan to use a gainclone design for a final stage, and have LM 3875, 3886, 4780, and 4766 chips on order to play around with - This will be my first build of this type, I figure as long as I have a TI sample account I might as well use it and experiment... Working backwards from there, I envision a simple, oldschool bass/treble/balance pot controlled preamp - they have a chip for that too, forget the PN at the moment but it's in the order.

As far as input switching, I'm not concerned with that at the moment - I'm fine with manual for testing, if not for a final design, and have a handful of atmega328's if I decide to go digital. For my purposes I only need 2-3 inputs, but if done correctly the design should be infinitely scalable.

Now, as this is intended to be a home theatre setup, I am hungup on the HDMI side of it - Both my current TV and the one on order will output stereo audio, which is perfectly fine for my purposes - But if possible I would like to add an HDMI passthrough that would extract the audio stream inline. Searching around, I find little except for a couple of overkill chips from NXP...

This is going to be a long-term project, and the HDMI portion is the last consideration - I have a decent stereo/receiver that will suit me in the meantime - and I'll need to find something to convert X.X to 2.0 to boot - I do plan to use a modular design, so the other stages can be built and tested while researching the rest.

...So, any ideas or suggestions? I know the HDMI part has to have been brought up before - But all I seem to find is rediculously overpowered parts in BGA or QFN packages and licensing discussions - The rest of the project is easy in comparison...

I was going to say welcome to diyAudio... but then noticed you've been here 6 years 😀

Welcome anyway 🙂

(As to your questions... I think its probably best for you to break them down and ask each one in the appropriate forum, chip amps for the outputs, analogue line level for the switching and tone controls etc. Good luck)
