newb going full range

Hello,

I am currently building Nelson Pass's SOZ. I would like to build a nice full ranger to complement it. I've been looking at Martin J. King's site and found this. As far as enclosure building goes, I dont think it gets any easier. Anyone try this "virtual" project?


My one channel, soon to be two, SOZ in rough form.

If a backhorn design is a consideration, Ron Brady
has been doing some interesting things with
a fabricator whose name is layertone.

without making an overly amount of ref.s to
full range driver forum. Ron's handle on there is
something roncla. I'll remember.

Oh yes. I've built two pairs and very wonderful they are too. However, what sort of power-output from your Son of Zen are you going for, and are you going to upgrade your amp (looks good BTW!) to the Variation 6? I ask, because like all of these single-gain-stage amplifiers, the distrotion in the original SOZ rises rapidly with output, and these MLTLs are a heftier load than you'd originally think, because of the BSC circuit required. I'm not knocking Admiral Nelson -far from it, and I'm thinking about building the Variation 6 SOZ myself, but it's something you have to keep in mind. That Varitation 6 with its unusual and very simple feedback keeps in the spirit of the thing but should allow somewhat better performance into a heavier load. It's also very cheap and simple to modify the circuit.

Bob's speakers are superb -he is the absolute master at tweaking and designing in Martin's MathCad worksheets, and I don't doubt they sound spectacular (I haven't heard them myself); but Martin's original vitual project won't be too far behind -just a bit less refined. And you can tweak it yourself if you want. My last pair were wide-baffle types which allowed almost the complete removal of the BSC circuit.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I have more reading to do. Right now the Soz's output is around 35-40 watts. I have it connected to a Polk bookshelf speaker with a 89dB sensitivity. With my 12x12 room, most listening is done at lower power prob around 10-15 watts, its very loud and precise. SOZ v6 is definitely a modification I will be doing in the future.
