Get a cheap single-ended transformer from www.webervst.com. Fond the schematic and layout for the fender champ 5F1 online. Figure out the bits and pieces you will need and pick them up at an electronics parts store or online. Go to the supermarket and get a medium size cake pan. When you get yer guitar to make noise though it into speaker you will never look back. Enjoy!!!

I just recently got my hands on a hammond 272FX power transformer, 12ax7, and a J&J 6v6.

where do you guys, who know a lot more about this than me, think I should start?

The 272FX is "way bigger" than you need. But that is OK it allows a ton of filtering

Can you describe the sound you are looking for? Or maybe a genre of music.

For a high gain kind of sound you might want a second 12ax7 tube.

You are going to need an output transformer. Don't go cheap on that. That transformer is likely more important to the sound then which tube you use.

If you like a somewhat clean Fender Tweed sound try building a Fender "Champ" the AX84 type amp can be a bit more aggressive sounding. The major difference really is that the Fender Champ uses some negative feedback. I build one of each type amp and I think it is the NFB that makes them sound so different, There are MANY demos of the sound of each amp on youtube. Listen for a while then decide.

BTW I like the "Classic Tone" branded output transforms sold by Triode Eletronics. Very high quality for a mid range price.
