Hi,
I'm new here. I'm looking for templates and help building wooden horns. I see the software to figure angles and sizes (whew this is a lot more than I imagined)
I really just want to build some old Gramophone style horns to vent the sub towers I'm about to build. (I didn't know there is so much involved to get the frequencies and sound tuned)
I'm 38 and have always toyed with car audio, guitars, and never understood why my Dads friend was always so excited about his Mcintosh tube amps and Klipschorn speakers. Besides they sounded phenomenal. It's cause they are so expensive!
I lost all my (what I thought was nice) Yamaha & Denon receivers and Amps in my divorce. I had two Cerwin Vega cabinets, nothing great but it was loud.
I'm saving to buy nice amps as they come around, but after reading some posts on here I am overwhelmed. I had a crown amp that pushed two of my 2,500 watt, 18" subs well. (Lost that in divorce too but still have four 18" subs)
What amp would You folks recommend to push a or two 2,500 watt subs?
I really want tube amps but from what I understand, they only have like 50watts per channel like my Vox Valvetronix guitar amp.
Can a tube amp push a sub that size? I'm really shooting for clean sound but from my experience, high watts ='s loud buzzing, and noise thru the speakers.
I could just go with tube amps for my mids and highs (which I don't even know what to buy). I know that I don't know what's good these days but I want to know without having to get a degree in HiFi.
Do we have members of this site that build nice tube amps to sell?
How about nice speakers to sell?
Or should I just go buy higher grade Klipsch speaker towers from Best Buy and spend my money on amps?
What would you do if you were starting over and strapped for cash?
I even thought about upgrading from my (Free) beats headphones and buying a little amp for my headphones, but that can get really expensive as well!
Oh, I lost my 1978 Technics turntable and record collection too🙁
So any advice on a turntable as well.
I'm listening to FLAC and (in the future) Vinyl again.
I want the best quality hifi gear for my buck.
Thanks Everyone and Cheers~

Hi Micah, welcome to diyAudio. You might want to move your questions to the appropriate forums and reduce the amount of questions per post, you'll get a better response that way.
Micah,
Happened across your post...
Let's start with the first thing I saw.
Something about a "grammaphone horn" to "vent"(??) a sub enclosure???
Wazzat?
The other thing is that there are not very many subs that can use 2500 watts.
What size space are you in?
Why do you want or think you want that much power?
How much SPL at what frequencies are you trying to generate?
And, this is in the small to medium size club range, not a typically sized room in a home.
A Crown MacroTech is a fine amp for running subs.
Tubes are mostly for midbass, midrange and high freqs in a higher power system.
Anyhow, you've landed in a place that is DEEP with information and technical expertise and experience. Otoh, newcomers can get good input, but it's best to search some threads first, and then ask questions that are reasonably focused.
For example the things I mentioned above need to be made clear before anyone can give you any reasonable advice...
hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply and info!
We sold our family theatre several years ago and I still have the four 18" subs and looking for something to do with them.
I'll have all the specs when I pick them up this weekend. I want to use these for low frequencies. Room is about 24'x24'. And I know the subs might be a bit overkill.
Thanks for your reply and I will surf the threads and have more info before posting.
Cheers

Ok, well a lot depends on the T/S parameters for the drivers.
Once you know what they are, and how many you have, then you'll be able to find out about ways that they can be used effectively.
IF you own the house, AND you don't have a WAF issue (Wife Approval Factor) you can get the ultimate performance from drivers that happen to have the right range of T/S parameters by doing an "IB" aka Infinite Baffle.
That's where you put them in the floor/ceiling/walls and use the opposite side (like the entire basement) as the "box volume".
Something to consider.
But you're into a subject that has literally dozens of basic possibilities for a system, and also picking just ONE design idea another, then another large set of variables to chose amongst. Not impossible at all, but you have to narrow it down, if only to investigate.
So, your job is to reduce the number of possible designs, and base that upon your desires/needs & so the specs required to achieve that.
For example if you said, "I only listen to small classical ensembles" vs. "I like hip-hop and hold parties for 50 people" you'd have entirely different design requirements. Being able to do BOTH is even more of an effort (but possible!)
I think the subs will prove to be the easier part...

Bear,
Thanks for that info! I'll look up what You spoke of.
So, with that Crown amp, I had issues with hiss/noise in between songs when it was cranked up. What do I do to have an amp turned up and there be nothing coming from the speakers until the song starts?
You just gave me a great idea with the infinite speaker setup! (im looking at this long kitchen island and thinking Sunbelt enclosure!) (if possible to meet sound requirements in that room)
The wife isn't the problem, it's all her chinaware that I could break/rattle off the shelves with too much bass.
I want to feel the bass when I play "Live it up" by the Isley Brothers and Flea's Bass lines.
Cheers

Well, if you hear hiss with the INPUTS to the amp shorted, then the source is elsewhere.
The Crown MacroTech amp is pretty quiet.
A lot depends on how sensitive your HF speakers are - there ought to me no hiss coming from subs, no matter how noisy the amp or input signal.
You can't analyze these issues without being clear about the details of the system, or even the proposed system. Too many variables that are completely unknown.
Your basic "semi-pro" or "consumer" (inexpensive) PA products tend to be not very quiet or good. Of course you can do mods, but that's another thing.
If you want to "feel the bass" then you want high SPLs like a club environment?
It's doable, but again you need to fully define and make clear the entire situation - no one can guess for you.
Don't forget your budget matters too as far as what can be done.
Also how much you can or are willing to build or do yourself.

I posted this in the correct forum (subwoofers) I can't find the specs on my subs. The are professional audio systems PAS 18800 18". I have four of them.
I've had a nasty cold/flu thing - I said that backwards.
IF the INPUTS to the amp are shorted and there is NO HISS, then the hiss comes from BEFORE the amp...
