New to soldering - how do I remove solder residue from PCB traces?

Well i have three file sizes, round conical shape, thinner at the point... so i also do drilling, home-made boards with copper tracks, not tinned.

Drilling from copper side, than enlarging if needed by round action around edges.

Btw files are strong enough to work on 2mm metal plate holes... if needed, of course this is the last resort beacuse it takes lot of time.

For example drilled 20mm holes for tube chasis sockets which were 21mm diameter, finished with file.

Or drilling holes for DO-41 diodes with 1mm drill tip, than enlarged with a file a little, just for diode "pins" ( sorry for bad english ) to pass through the hole.

The files can be found as jewelry tools, round type, conical, 1,5-2mm at thickest end.

These are fine tools, they are not going to destroy copper tracks in any way.

Personally i do the drilling and using file if i must - it is not first choice but could be in specific situation, for example as in Yoshimitsu's case where hole already exist and other components are already mounted on pcb.

I have drills - HSS - in 06, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0 mm for small jobs, use by hand in pin vice or at highest sped possible on a bench drill, the slightest off kilter can break those.
Center punch first.
For this case, making a small hole bigger, I have already described my method.

I know one can get around the software, but I won't bother, it just surprised me.

I have no idea their fractional sizes, but I always have a few #56 and #62 drills on hand. Nothing special about those numbers, I have them for specific uses outside of electronics. Small number drills can be had a hobby stores and well stocked hardware stores.
