New stereo system - which one

Freiheit, I hope you enjoy your project very much. An easy and nice option for a passive preamp is the glassware audio “FrontPanel”. It has a source selector and resistor based volume control built into a single board.

You may also benefit from the “Deluxe” chassis in the diyaudio store. Tapping alot of small holes to mount the boards to the heatsink and cutting the square hole for the IEC inlet could be a challenge for some.

If you aren’t 100% set on the Aleph J I would recommend building a higher output BA-3 exactly like the one in the 6L6 build guide. It has more power and handles low impedence loads very well giving alot of flexibility in speaker choice. Besides that it sounds great too!

Have fun!

Thank you very much for your responses.

I have spent some more hours looking through threads and different builds and now my head is spinning. 🙂

On the basis of the recommendations of drpro, Zen Mod, qwertyl (thank you!), I am now swaying between the M2 and the Aleph J. I am not sure how to choose between these build options. I will sleep over it.

ColinA123 and 6L6 > Thank you very much for your perspectives on the preamp. I now see the advantages of an active preamp. It surprised me that it was possible to even simply use a stepped attenuator only for volume control, though of course it makes sense.

csample > Thank you for the recommendation. The front panel looks like a great option, thank you!

Signing off for the day/night.

Hi everyone, just letting you know that I am going for the M2X first. I like the flexibilty of the different input stages.

For the build I envisage monoblocks with power supplies in separate housings. To keep costs down, I will attempt to build the four required chassis myself.

Hope I am not biting of more than I can chew ;-)

Dear everyone,

9 months after starting this threat and just before the end of the current year, I would like to again thank everyone, who has commented and sent me on my journey.

I also would like to let you know, that I am still working on this project with a lot of enthusiasm.

I am currently building two M2X monoblock amplifiers (two cases as suggested by 6L6). My cellar is full of cables and things that my family finds hard to understand 🙂. The aleph J will follow later.

I am building the amplifier cases myself. The way in which I approache this, it means that the cost of building exceed the cost of buying a case, also because I need to aquire the right tooling. Nonetheless, it is very teaching.

The case plans are public and can be accessed online.

If you are curious about the case, see this thread.

I remain thanking you for your impulses and wish you a nice new year, very shortly!
