New Ribbons approaching completion

HI All
Thought some may be interested in some ribbons I’ve been working on for some time and now I feel approaching the end of their “Development”.
Currently they are in “wings” hanging off my floor standers that were some years ago posted under the “clonus faber thread”
Photos attached.

Driver compliment goes like this:
Sub- Peerless 12”xls in 140litre cabinet –Hafler dh-200 amp –up to 80hz.
Bass/Mid – Scanspeak 15w8530 revelators 80hz to 500hz (hafler dh-200)
Tweets- 26” long by 1” wide ribbons 500HZ and up – unless really loud when I xover at 800Hz or so. Amp DIY Pass Aleph 5
Xover DCX2496-
Pre amp (kludged Pioneer receiver for interim)
Source PC running JRiver with Wasapi or something like that
I will next week try going straight digital/AES from PC to DCX….

The XT25 vifa tweets are not being used….just couldn’t get them sounding satisfactory..

The interesting part which may be of some use –The Ribbons:
Magnets Neo’s N45 0.5”x0.5”x 2”- 26 per side/channel.
Steel frame = ½” x1” (1008 or something like that – but bought locally as tool steel)

Impedence matching- was using some transformer from Howard Audio in England (bought off ebay)- this works very well indeed.
I had also recently tried to procure some AMCC cores to make some transformers myself - but this proved difficult in the land of OZ.
In the mean time I tried just wiring the amps to the ribbons via some in line 4ohm resistors- this has also worked well enough to stop me looking for the amcc cores…

At this time I have no EQ at all and xover via the DCX are 48db Linkwitz/Riley slopes.
Time alignment not done yet . and I am trying to decide whether to go dipole (not much room behind them or go monopole (trying to emulate this by absorbent stuff and a solid panel behind the tweets..)

The sound?

So far they sound fine enough that I haven’t spent much time at all trying the monopole/diploe configuration and just been enjoying the music.
Actually they sound better than fine and on some recording are absolutely fantastic- especially the top end .
Cymbals and steel guitar , violin are exceptional ..
I will run some frequency tests when I get a chance.
Imaging is razor sharp
I no longer hanker after any of the available mega$ tweeters that are around.

In terms of volume with the Pass A5- they go too loud for my teenage kids..
Some distortion is audible at high volume – not sure if it’s the ribbons or the amp running out of steam….

I sincerely suspect that once I sort them out they will be the last speaks I will build for quite some while. ( Actually the wife is making sure of this…)

Happy to answer any questions – you guys here have been helping me out for years..

Cheers

Congratulations! They look great. Please share whatever measurements you come up with as things proceed. They'd be very helpful to the rest of us still in the prototype and drawing board phases.
