New Project - TAD 2404 Clone

Last question : will power amp of 140watt@8ohm enough to drive 1601b?

Holy Crap. If you play loud, in a big room, with music with considerable dynamics, 14w would likely be sufficient.

A 140w amp will often be challenged sonically by smaller less complex amps, and as Julian Vereker said, the best sounding amp should go up top. Pu tth ebig amp on the woofers, and look for a small Class A amp would be my suggestion.

You want help with the alignment for the Scan? A link to the data?

Hi,

I have never use TAD woofer before, I only have TAD 4003 now. That is why I ask 🙂

I need help with box dimension. Larry from this thread is kind enough to send me E-170 drawing from Yuichi.

All crossover will be in DSP. I'm using Bi-amp for low and high.

4x subs: 15hz-60hz
1601b: 60hz-650hz
TAD 4003: 650hz-20Khz

Should I use E-170 dimension but keep the port holes in the top like TAD 2402?

I really hope someone can tell me the dimension that is best for my setup.

Best,
Dan

Greets!

I recommend using Vb = Vas/1.44 to allow using a standard box program, so 304 L/1.44 = ~211 L net and considering the 50-60 Hz XO to subs, recommend it be sealed [0.5 Qtc/transient perfect].

Hornresp sims ~120 dB/m/2pi @ Xmax/60 Hz with 4th order XO, so is about as loud as I played Led Zepplin, etc., Gershwin, etc., full orchestra when wanting a front row center 'feel' to the performance, so any louder is just 'loud for loud's sake' IME, i.e. a 'Headbanger's Ball' type performance for the seriously 'stoned'.

Hi,

May I know why are you suggesting sealed?

This is my 1st time using WinISD, I watch youtube how to do it. Hopefully it is correct.

Green is vented 150L @ 35 freq, blue is sealed @ 211L.

So based on this, vented is much better. I want the most neutral freq response.

I just want to make sure the ported hole is correct

Can someone help?

Thanks

This is my first post on DIYAUDIO, woohoo! 🙂

I have a growing interest in the TAD2404 speaker and I'm tempted by the idea to try to build a clone. But reading this whole thread made me realize that a detailed drawing of the cabinet is not available. Do I make the correct conclusion? The lucky ones that succeded in cloning this speaker, did you apply some serious reverse engineering?

Thanks,

Dominic

Hi,
I'm also experimenting a personal TAD2404 concept. So I follow this thread with attention 🙂

The changes from original design are :
Enclosure : E-170 with TL-1603 (tuned to 32-33 Hz)
Horn : TH-4003 replica with TD-4002
The xover is active and custom, simulated from outdoor measurements, in order to provide the best phase match between drivers
(and reasonably flat frquency response). To achive this, I had to use asymetrical acoustic slopes,
low-pass 48dB and high-pass 12dB electrical (24 acoustic or so).
To get level matching between horn and woofer, I use an autoformer 😉

Now the design is functionnal, I had a few indoor tests to confirm.
I still have to run final measurements in order to get a phase error correction of the IIR and slight EQs.

Maybe I'll have to start a new thread to present all this !

Best regards,

Worth mentioning that Joseph Crowe has designed a speaker that is inspired by the 2404 . . .

If you start a dedicated thread it would be great! Just make sure to link it to this thread so we'll know.

Oh, and don't forget to post pics of your progress!
😉

Couple of years ago I went to John Wolff of Classic Audio Reproduction fame . He had boxes filled with crossovers from upgrading his TAD based speakers to field coild /tractrix versions . Ribbon inductors and Hovland Caps -straight copies of TAD designs for a silly money.

Hello,

the Arai A-290 would be a good match to the TD-4003 driver.
Yuichi even designed a dedicated adaptor for it - see attachment below.

W.r.t. the TH-4003, you'd be trading off improved horizontal coverage > 8kHz for some diffraction (induced by the vanes). But nothing dramatic, IMHO.

Marco.
Marco, I read your threads on the French website about the tn-2, I was wondering if you had a final say about the values? I tried to PM you directly but it appears to be disabled.
Thanks in advance, Bill
