New PassDIY Headphone Amp (now available)

Fixed the gain. Matched all the 10k resistors. Dc offset in both channels while loaded is 17mV. Can I lower it further?

I also had hum while touching the volume pot, reduced when I connected ground with earth. I still have it but at a lot higher volume, any suggestions?

Just about two weeks since my Whammy build, this thing is really very good indeed, add the right regs and its transformed into something quite sublime 'when used as a pre-amp'...I don't do headphones 'she says they make me look ugly'

Got to leave it powered up though....

Hi Laverda,

Would you share a little more info on your choice of reg,Teddy regs are good ,Salas has a fine reg board in the store I have several of them,so what make the spec reg inferior? and the teddy better?
I am assuming it's in sound,so clarity,noise,tone,sonic,or personal preference?
What are you using for headphones? and what is your source?
I am not attacking you ! I would just value your opinion,I got my board yesterday and getting ready to assemble it!🙂

May the light shine on me!

Choice in regulators is similar to choice in capacitors or choice in cables. Same idea, different manifestation.

The reg on the PCB is very quiet. There are different choices that could be made and the circuit still work. Give them a try if you like, see what you think.

That's the best part of DIY - we can give things a try and discover for ourselves.

😀 😀 😀

Hi 6L6

Very true,
I think for myself I will build it bone stock and take a listen for a while.
I went to the teddy site ,a few posts back and he recommends buying his regs complete and ready to go and tested ,because he has found differences in fets and caps
that were only found after assembly and during testing.

My kit, LinnLP12 Naim Aro, Dynavector XX2MKII, PearlII, Naim CDI (Modified) Naim CD3 (Modified) Various Pre amps DIY and modified, F5t monos and I've ended up with Martin Logan electrostatic speakers and a ATC sub.

The 'S'Teddy reg has a sonic signature that is beguiling IMO and others. There is a delicacy to the presentation 'dare I say they impart an analogue' more natural sound. The bottom end has more weight and is betted defined. (controlled) Mids have more presence and clarity. The highs shimmer...symbols are metallic rather than a sshh..if you get my drift. Vocals have texture that is tonsil touching realistic....

Over the years I have tried most if not all incarnations of 'audio regulators' but have stopped looking....And yes the Teddy 'ready built' reg is better than the reg you can build yourself and cheaper. Been there done that..

BTW I have no connection with Teddy Pardo other than I'm a customer.

The circuit performance should be immune to small changes in device parameters. It is normal for all components, both passive and active, to have a tolerance on the various parameters.

Performance that changes for small changes in parameters of the same devices is usually taken to mean the circuit is not working well/properly.

Just as an experiment I thought I would try two transformers, one per each rail (galvanic isolation) and a very nice lift to the presentation. Not night and day but as I had one knocking about I thought I'd give it a go. Deeper, more controlled bass with added clarity and dynamics.
