Hi Guys,
I made an open baffle speaker in the spring using the Lii Audio F-15. It was fun, but other builds caught my very short attention span🙂
So I sold them and moved on. But now I'm sorta coming back to wanting to play around with that sound.
I need your advice: This time I want to go two or three way. I will use a passive crossover. As ever, how do I get punchy bass that goes below, say, 30 hz?
I have narrowed it down to three bass drivers:
I hope you can point me in right direction.
Kind regards,
Mads

I have narrowed it down to three bass drivers:
- The W-15 from Lii Audio (one on each side)
- The SB Audience Bianco 15OB (two on each side (if it makes sense))
- Something from Acoustic Elegance (one on each side)
I hope you can point me in right direction.

In my limited OB experience I've found you really either need to damp the midbass and up to get the bass and this severely lowers efficiency, or use biamp and XO prior amps. XO can be passive between preamp and amps, but then at best 2.order in the real world. In my current OB I am driving my SB Audio Bianco 15OB with a small tube amp, and the fullrange with a smaller tube amp. My baffle is approx 90cm tall and 70cm wide. Single woofer. Bass is plentyfull in my house in my opinion.
Why 2 if you go with Bianco 15OB? B/c they are cheap enough? The baffle and XO (with level adjustment of the midbass-up) plays a larger role and single woofer is more elegant... my opinion.

Thank you for your reply.
My knowledge is limited. I was under the impression that you got more bass with two woofer per side?

You are correct……two drivers are more efficient and effective than one of the same. You can also extend the bass response lower by adding equalization where two drivers will handle more power.Thank you for your reply.

Consider building your SB woofers in what’s called an H frame which adds physical distance between the front and rear wave which reduces phase cancellations OR a really wide baffle…..not an optimum choice for folks where space is at a premium.
Two SB 15’s per side (4 in total) should get you decent response with room gain to 30hz…..with a little EQ and reasonable expectations on system output, a bit lower…….good for most music. Low A on a piano for reference is 27.5hz.
The Martin j. King H-frames are what I have. Sounds good to me. I also have the Jordans in an open baffle on top. Block stock like MJK designed. Others will have more technical info on the H-frame approach. I used the passive setup. Regards, Bill
H-frame looks cool🙂
I might have a problem navigating this site, but I can't seem to find any comparisons between the Lii Audio W-15 and the Bianco 15OB. Have anyone tried both?
Is the technical data for Acoustic Elegance trustworthy? Their Dipole15 has a Fs of 21.7 Hz! Is this really true?
