New open baffle pictures

Well chaps, it's Sunday so how about some pictures?

I have finally got rid of my rather utilitarian baffles and replaced them with something a bit more at home in a living room.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

There are more pictures and a description HERE on Decibel Dungeon.

Dipole woofers

Nuuk,
Came across John Kreskovsky's new design the other day. This U-frame idea looks interesting in that only one driver would be necessary, though I don't know if the requirements on driver Q would be relaxed (and of course the driver he uses isn't easily available in the UK...).
If I read correctly he says the cardiod should sound similar to a dipole as they're both 'velocity source' rather than 'pressure source' systems. Must think about this...

Nice woodwork! I just wonder; how did you go about when you decided the shape of the baffle?

Well it was a case of 'necessity being the mother of invention' really.

I wanted the solid part of the baffle as narrow as possible so the width was set at the diameter of the main driver plus the depth of the slots for the glass. Luckily, this coincided with the width of two of the flooring panels used to make the front of the panels.

The height (and top curve) was based on drawing an arc from the centre of the main driver, where the radius was the distance from the centre of the driver to the closest edge of the baffle.

This resulted in the height of the baffles being some 120mm less than that of my prototype baffes and as I have found there to be a slight reduction in bass, I think that I should have made them a bit taller but that's DIY hi-fi! :xeye: As I am adding woofers anyway, it is not the end of the world 😎

The dimensions of the 'glass wings' were chosen to produce a slightly wider baffle than the prototypes and I just chose to put a quarter round on each corner.
