Hi,
What Matsen really meant was the transformer recommended earlier by Lars:
http://www.elfa.se/elfa-bin/dyndok.pl?lang=se&dok=2021854.htm
Something seems to be wrong with the link in the previous post.

Question
Hi ,
My first post, so be nice ...
I'm in the same process as you, deciding on components, so
I'm just wondering, why not looking at a smps, such a coldamp's ?
Your reasoning can help me in mine.

Thanx...
Wonder where I got that link from.... 😀
Re: Question
I've never listened to any DIY Class-D amp so my choice of components is being done purely by some kind of intuition. If you have read some of the threads in the Class D part in this forum you will see Lars Claussens comments all around and I have got a faith in that man… This modules aren’t the cheapest but they are hopefully the BEST!!! 😉
Then it is to every person to decide what module they want – every person has its own taste!
Me and Supernaut77 has been discussing to build as the combo above but there are millions of variations u can do and several modules that are cheaper and some are more expensive (ICE)...

That is a great transformer. I have two of them in my zappulse monoblocks.
Lars, this project of yours looks interesting.
Maybe place an order 😕 Oh yes, maybe.....

An easy way to softstart is to use a three position power switch.
Position 1=off
Position 2=on in series with a high wattage resistor
Position 3=on unlimited.
I used that on a few occasions when helping friends to build their Milleniums and it never failed, but on two occasions the softstart from LCAudio has self destroyed.

Hmmm... Any recomendation of another softstart then - I would prefer one that not gets self destroyed….
Maybe this one?

The reason for the faillure is a chain of .1w sm resistors in serial connection of which one or a few burns. It's easily corrected by replacing the chain with one 1 or 2W 'real' 😀 resistor.
The amplifiers are still working if the softstart breaks down but at a reduced effekt😀
Have a look at:
www.coldamp.com
We have a linear PSU with integrated soft-start, as well as switching power supplies that may meet your needs.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Sergio

Lars: from a newbe's point of view a proper softstart in your programme (and maybe DC-trap) would appeal many first timers and motivate them to chose your modules. I really think it could help your business 🙂
IKEA wouldn't have grown so big if one had to pick up parts from several manufacturers...

Why not a simple thermistor like in most Pass amps. They have tons of capacitance and need this.It helps the speakers too.

Hi Sergio,
Maybe you could send a SMPS to Lars so he could run through a sound and safety test using it? It sure would be ideal for me to have a suitable SMPS.
🙂

Please search the forum and you'll find out why not, it's been answered countless times.
It would be nice if we could avoid such topics and keep the thread more focused on the modules.
classd4sure.... TRUE!!
Lets talk about the new modules!!!
Will you (Lars) use some kind of hometesters, e.g. persons that test the modules for you in a home environment and test your "cookbook"?
I can be the newbietester.... 😀

Current reference amplifier, demonstration model in the works UCD400AD stereo setup wired bi-phase, Jensen caps IXYS dual bridges plitron 500VA transformer, good for just over 200W a channel. More detail when I do the write up.
It's going to be a good shoot out anyway, but I don't intend to make it entirely a UCD Vs Newclassd comparison, there'll no doubt be some sort of mention though.
Cheers,
Chris

Chris,
I hope there will be more listening impressions than measurements. 🙂 Also, it would be really interesting with a shoot out between NCD-1, UCD and NuForce if it is possible...
