New KSS-210A for Teac PD-H300 CD player not working

Hi everybody:

My CD player doesn't read CDs: the CD spins but after a short while it ends up in an all-zeros display.

So I replaced the KSS-210A laser unit with a new one. I was careful with static and removed the solder blob. Only to find that with the new one, the player didn't even spin the disk: the lens bobs up and down three times and then I get a "No disk" display. I installed back the old unit, and it kept spinning the disk, just as before. So it seemed there was something wrong with the new unit. I ordered a second one and have just installed with the same exact result! So there must be something wrong with what I am doing...

I can see no red light when the lens bobs up and down, but I cannot see it with the old laser unit either, even when it does detect the disk and starts spinning the disk. I already checked the connectors and everything seems to be tight. I made up my mind to touch the power pot, but no luck either.

Do you think that *both* new units could be faulty?? Sounds very unlikely... Any other things or tests that you guys can can think of? Any help would be very appreciated!

Thanks and regards,

VLM
PD: First timer, it's a great forum!

The CD will normally only spin once the laser finds focus onto the disc surface. It is odd that two replacements both give the same fault, also, although the red light from the lens can be hard to see, it should be visible.

Are you 100% sure you are unsoldering the correct static protection 'blob' ?

Can you see the old laser illuminate ? Always observe from a safe distance of at least 30cm and slightly off axis.

Hi Mooly, and thank you for your quick reply!

I looked for the red light in complete darkness and, yes, I can see a tiny red spot blinking with the old laser unit, but NOT with the new ones.

Regarding the anti-static solder blob, I am attaching pictures of the old unit (left) and one of the new ones (right). I have circled the removed blob in both. I have checked the open-circuit with a multimeter.

While taking the pictures, I could notice that both units have slight differences, even they are both KSS-210A. Could the ones I bought be just lousy quality??? I got them from a german vendor through Amazon (12 euro). I saw another one from Sony (27 euro). Should I buy the latter??

Thank you Mooly,
Victor

Certainly sounds like there is an issue with the replacements because the light should be visible no matter what other problems there may or may not be.

The 'Sony' you have seen is pretty much certain to be a generic replacement and not manufactured by Sony.

We used to order these by the dozen years ago and never had issues:

Check out official suppliers of spares in your country rather than looking on Amazon and Ebay.

Thank you, Mooly, thimios.

I'll try Farnell or l might check if I can find a replacement from a physical store. Perhaps careless delivery services when buying online break the units or something. I'll get back here if I get any improvements.

Thanks and regards,
Victor
