Hey,
I'm planning on doing some upgrades on my equipment, maybe you guys should take a look at what I've got in mind.
My current speakers are basreflex speakers with :
Tweeters DT-252
Mid/woofers
The prob is that my current mid/woofers can goe hard when there's lots of bass involved.
My thought was to keep my current basreflex and add following woofer cabinets with :
Woofer SPH-170C
Is this doable??
Will having mids in a basreflex be bad??
Hope you guys can help me out a bit.

Subwoofers
What you are describing is a subwoofer/satellite configuration. People use subwoofers for different things. With most hi-fi manufacturers, subwoofers are hidden out of the way to add bass to really small speakers that have little or no bass on their own. When they're used in the context of PA sound systems, people are just adding cone area to free up the drivers that would otherwise be the woofers and divert the bass to extra woofers that would be more suitable for bass in large roomsor over long distances.
Don't forget to use a crossover! This directs the lower frequency sounds to the woofer and the higher-frequency things to your satellite speakers. Otherwise the sound will not be as good.

crossover
Actually, bass-reflex speakers and separate subwoofers are better because the crossover point to the subwoofers will be lower. This means purer bass from your subwoofers. Try a crossover point around 70 Hz.

I think you've got the wrong impression I'm planning to make something similar like this :EVE II
My current setup already consists of a subwoofer (25cm driver) and the two sats I described above. But the problem is that on high volumes the sats still seem to have trouble to handle the bass.
With my current setup I've got the sub going up to 130 hz and from there the sats take over.
I'm now planning to make 2 extra cabinets that can go up to 300 or 400 hz and from there the mid and tweeter take over, my thought was that this way my current mid/bass should have it a lot easier because now it's almost completely deprived of bass and only has to worry about the mids which (I think) don't need big excursions or large cone areas.
I'm planning to still use my sub when I watch a movie or so but for music the sub won't come into play anymore.
I also like the look and the idea of a brainbox outside of the speaker.
Maybe you guys could recommend me a good speaker from these lists : (monacor is easy to come by)

Hi Bylie
You are planning to do what I am currently in the process of doing so I hope your plan is good too. My problem is lack of bass, so I'm adding a couple of Scan Speak 25cm woofers in separate sealed enclosures that will sit under my current 2-way reflex speakers. I'm adding a second amp and active crossover.
The normal advice that seems to be given if you are doing this is to turn the existing reflex speakers into sealed units by blocking the ports. This creates a more gentle phase change and rolloff in the bass region of your mid/high unit to make integration with the bass speakers better. Also, the f3 rolloff point is normally recommended to be at least one or preferably two octaves below the cross point, which it should be in your case.
I haven't finished this project yet, so I can't tell you how it works out. Maybe another month or so and I can tell you how it went.
I would guess that your speakers should be able to go a lot harder with the extra speakers added, assuming that you are running out of excursion on your speakers when playing lots of bass. If your amp is running out of power (ie clipping), then adding another bass speaker will probably only help if you biamp using an extra amp and active crossover. Have a read of Rod Elliot's article on biamping at http://www.sound.westhost.com/bi-amp.htm.

Hi Kanga,
Thx for the reply.
I'll probably be adding 20 cm (8inch) units as 25 cm (10inch) woofers are a bit too big.
Which of the below woofers would be best :
- SPH-212
- SPH-225C
- SPH-200TC
- SPH-200CTC
I especially like the SPH-225C because it can do a long excursion.

Hi Bylie
I haven't heard much about Monocor and I don't know if I can give you specific suggestions about the quality of specific drivers. Peerless seems to get a good rap in terms of value for bass speakers. However if you are just interested in the suitability of the drivers you listed for what you are trying to do, then you'll need to decide:
Enclosure type - sealed or reflex
Enclosure size - what's the largest size you want to live with?
Bass extension - how low do you want to go?
Crossover - are you going to drive all three drivers with one amp, or go the active route with an extra amp?
Amp - how powerful is your current amp?
Sensitivity - if you are going passive XO, then what is the sensitivity of your existing 2-ways?
Loudness - are you looking for something that can go loud?
How much do you want to spend?
With answers to these questions, and possibly more that I haven't thought of yet, I and hopefully others can probably give you a head start in choosing a driver.

Hey,
Just got bad news, my financial means are a bit limited for the moment so I have to choose between these two things :
I would either make my current subwoofer active with a Hypex HS200 (INFO) subwoofermodule or add 2 cabinets with woofers and keep my subwoofer passive.
What to do??
Btw what is a good crossoverpoint between a sub and the sats??

Bylie,
If your sats are only playing above 130Hz then I don't think you should be having a problem with over-excursion unless you're playing ~very~ loud.
What order crossover are you using between the sub and the sats? If it's a first order then I'd suggest increasing it to a second order (ie go from a series capacitor to a cap & inductor network).
Nice one,
David.

your existing mid wooferhas a linear x amx of little ove 2mm which is your problem.
if you are bottoming it out try a 2nd order HP XO at about 100Hz and see if it makes a difference. this would involce a cap and inductor.
you say your present sub i passive. if the above XO works making the sub active might help a lot. what are u useing to XO the sub now (at 130Hz)? Can you change this?
another solution is to put a 1st order XO at about 200Hz and see if you notice the lask or upper bass / lower mids.

Hey,
The filter I'm currently using is only a cap between the subwoofer and the sats.
But if I buy the subwooferamp I get a linkwitz-riley 4th order filter to the sats.
I've already worked things out a bit I think.
I'm planning to upgrade to a 5.1 system in a while (gradually buying everything) so maybe it was a good idea to use my current sats as rears and make me some brand new and better fronts.
