Howdy
I have been lurking about and reading posts here for awhile.
I am looking to build a set of speakers similar to these:
Faital-3WC-15
I know there are less costly options using eminence drivers.
Does someone have a complete set of plans for X-over and cabs?
the woodwork does not concern me, but I have no experience with x-overs.
I have soldered and built guitars. I can follow instructions.
I am looking for clearity and dymanics, not an analytical or brittle top end.
Punchy bass is necessary. texture and heft in the mids, is prefered. Just need high efficiency.
They will be powered by a 45W KT88 integrated amp.
Thank you
Joe

So, Joe, you want cabinet plans and crossover schematic for something "similar" to the Faitals.
What are the less costly options using Eminence drivers that you know about?

I'm not tring to start any trouble, Im sure Troels is well respected.
Maybe this isn;t the right forum for this, however, I read a thread and have extracted the following:
Similar design with Eminence drivers, all qty 2:
Eminence Kappa-15LFA 15" Low Frequency Driver 8 Ohm =$259.98
Eminence Alpha-6CBMRA 6-1/2" Ferrite Sealed Back Midrange Speaker Driver=$109.98
Eminence H290S 1" Bi-Radial Horn 90 x 40 1-3/8"-18 TPI Screw-On=$69.98
Eminence ASD1001 1" HF Titanium Horn Driver 1-3/8"-18 TPI=$69.98
Eminence PXB3:5K0 3-Way Speaker Crossover Board 500/5,000 Hz=$159.98
Product Total $669.90
Tons of options in this price range, this was just an example..

I wouldn't have thought about this route but I read this in the same thread as well
"I would also go a different direction than Troels, Troels makes great systems but they are (too) expensive, and can be made as good cheaper. If you want go further than ready made kits, you can use better drivers that are more detailed in their sound. But those are not that sensitive. I'm busy designing (but it's a long work) a 3 way kit (dome tweeter, 6" midwoofer, 12" subwoofer) that can be build below 1000€ and many designs are made like that. 86dB efficient and relative (+/- 6dB) flat from 30 to +20kHz is the goal.
But it's not that Troels designs are crap, they are very well thought of and sound very good (at least those i heared). If you want to pay the price for it, they can be the solution. It's just that they are expensive for what they are."

Parts-express is selling a faital 15 for $520.
They are selling the eminence kappalite 3015 that is +-3 db 120 hz to 1100 hz. Fs 45 hz qt .34 vas 5.4 cuft. $229
They are selling the eminence deltapro 15A that is +-3db 110 hz to 800 hz. Is +5 db @ 1100 hz. Fs 42 hz Qt .4 VAS 8.6 cuft $169
I bought two Deltapro 15a and am crossing over @ 1000 hz. My Peavey 22RX horns from SP2-XT cabinets will go down to 800 hz, but I'm stopping at 1000. Paid $170 for the pair ebay, they work. 2" horns, not 1". My ears stop @ 14 khz.
First cut on crossovers is 1.5 mh series the woofer. David weems says I can tame the 1000-1100 hz rise with a .82 mH coil parallel a 33 uF cap, parallel resistance to taste. I have 16 2 ohm 25 W resistors.
20 uf series 10 ohm series the tweeter. Tweeter clamped by 20 v zeners since they are 60 W rated, series a 3 amp blow PTCR fuse.
Building a 5.2 cuft cabinet for the first woofer, 23"x27"x 15" after the felt. Max vol eminence says is 4.7 cuft. One port will be 3.5" x 2" toilet flange. Cabinet is a partical board nightstand with front & back covers of 3/4 ply, not baltic. David Weems says 3 db bass point will be 84 hz. Would like lower since I play piano, but first cut will be this furniture @ 5.2 cuft. Eminence says no 8.4 cuft cabinets anyway. Might rip the woofer suspension. Can build 8.4 cuft out of 24"x48" lumber but it would be 24x23 front and 29" deep. 8.4 cuft cabinet would get f3 down to 42 hz. Lining of cabinets will be jute felt 40 lb.
Tweeter horns will be naked on pole like in SP2 on poles overhead. Nylon strap around driver head & wood strut to hold up the plastic horn, from the pole.
Fine tuning on crossover might be two $50 used graphic equalizers and a 2nd amp. I'm getting old peavey amps for about $50-200, putting new rail caps in them. Will do a lot of listening before I drop $150-300 on 5 amp crossover parts. Deltapro-15A rated 300 W.
Test setup will be farnell stellarlabs 1" condensor mike 35-5975, to PV8 mixer, to analog VOM. Test frequencies will be from Hammond H182 organ set to put out 2.83 v.

There's no problem in that respect, I was just trying to clarify your requirements. 😎I'm not tring to start any trouble, Im sure Troels is well respected.
It's all a bit complicated for me, so I hope someone in the know chips in.
Edit: indianajo chipped in as I typed!
Can the original crossover work? It might not be as bad as you think. Remember three things: focus on what you need but don't worry about any expensive crossover parts. At the least wait until you learn the right values to use, which may take time. Troels does go overboard with price here.. Make sure the Eminence drivers are of comparable sensitivity to the ones they are replacing. Thirdly, see that the 8" has a reasonable top end, the 15" can be cheap.
Then tweak it to your liking. The notch filters (the RLC parts next to the woofers) are likely not to be lined up exactly for different drivers. For the 8" in particular, try to gather information on both the original and your proposed substitute and compare them.

Troels makes a high sensivity 3 way, and of course it can be cheaper than this. But sensitivity will probally be lower then.
I had a plan with a SB26ADC dome tweeter, a Dayton RS180 midwoofer and a SB34NRX75-6 subwoofer that is very similar but only 86dB sensitive. Drivers would cost 300€ a side and for the crossove an 100€ max, so without the woodwork it's about 400€ a side. And that is only one of the many examples that could be done. The project is halted due to the lack of wood (due to covid) in my region. I'm not playing 4x the normal price for quality plywood now (but it's price is going down again as the stocks are filling again).
