new build - Buschhorn Mark II

hi folks,
wanted to share my lastest speaker build. Buschhorn Mark II with
fostex fe103e drivers. about 2 years ago I started down the full range driver path and was hooked. I built some small boxes for the little fe103 and used them with my 6em7 se amp. mostly for jazz and classical, some eletronic and
ambient music. loved the combo, but got the need for more ( go figure).

after searching for a plan for the fe103, I came upon the planet10 plans. it was a coin flip between ZigmaHorne or the buschhorn. The horns won, better looking and more fun to build.
The buid was great and the sound is amazing, fuller, more balnced, yet still has the detail i love.
anyway, here are some pictures. I used pine for the inside and birch ply for the outside. I sort'a faked the measurements inside because the pine was 3/4 stock. oops...they still sound really nice. still needs to build the other one 🙂.

the 6em7 drives the speaker well, better than the yamaha SS amp in the workshop. I have to finish the speakers next. some polyurethane most likely.
I built the 6em7 amp about 2 years as well, with help from the tube forum.
oh, the source is flac or acc files from pc thru diy dac and zen preamp.

best wish to all and thanks to all the folks on the forum who post, I learn a lot here.

Jeff

thanks guys,
I intend to fill the voids with sand on the bottom and pink fiberglass on the upper. do I just pour the sand in or maybe put it in a bag? hmm. sand and glue, not pretty....

If you use sand, make it "sterile" sand (availablility and price unknown to me), as stuff from the backyard may mold and ruin the enclosures. In my BH MkII (and all other cabs with voids), I use kitty litter...cheap, simple, dense and heavy. Pour some in, hit the side of the cab with a rubber mallet for a while, and fill 'er up. I can't remember where I saw it first, but it makes a lot of sense...

Not everywhere it isn't. Try coming to Hull, ask for that & see how far you get... 😉

pet stores, on the other hand abound - I bought my last box of k-litter at the local Costco (big-box chain warehouse)

but of course I can't resist suggesting that a die-hard "Horn" aficionado wouldn't consider anything other than copper clad lead reloading shot - preferably hygienically recycled from the carcass of last week's dinner.

Now there's an idea. And the cabinet should be made out of reclaimed wood from a wizard-hermit's shack.

So, OP, have you messed around with the size of the CC? I've rolled a few different drivers through the BH MkIIs and they all seem to prefer total deletion of the CC to relieve "honk". Makes the response more choppy but gives the illusion of more bottom end.

Kiln dried sand - available from hardware stores.

I don't get to put sand in anything but stands... i always do them on a hot summers day. I bake (on a big tarp) playbox sand from the Home Depot down the hill (just like having a neighbordhood building supply 7-11), making sure it is thorougly dried before installation. You can also use an oven (prefably with the wife somewhere else)

before "discovering" kitty litter, I used a glass bead type of sandblasting media ( I forget the name - SureShot or some such) - it's sold in 60 or 80 lb double layer paper bags and doesn't require drying
