Hey guys first post on this site.....I am on old maggie guy with typany 1d anyway I am wanting to build an high def center speaker that will accurately reproduce the range from bout 500 to 5k the human voice range. The speaker I have envisioned consists of 4 neo 8 mounted vertical on a spherical baffle with a neo 3 mounted in the center between the 8s xovered at around 8k or so to put the point out of the 1k to 5k range. The bottom will be covered by a couple 6 inch cones haven't picked them out yet. Figured I would xover somewhere around 500hz. I am lazy so using DACs and a tri amp configuration. I don't need the bottom end to go much below 75 hz. My main worry is dispersion, because it is a center speaker it needs to have a wide dispersion both vertical and horizontal. On and because of mounting conciterations it will have to be a mono pole....ok folks what ya think

Welcome aboard! I'm doing a NEO8 center channel speaker myself - - it's an odd-order D'Appolito WMTMW where the W are 6" Dayton aluminum cones, the M are NEO8's and the T is a Neil Davis type home-built Heil AMT (which I am sometimes tempted to trash for a NEO3). All are enclosed in the back, not dipoles. I'm using an DOD SR385 18db/octave 3-way active X-over to avoid breaking the bank, and to have odd-order crossovers for smooth response whether on the couch or off to the side. Crossover freqs are 110 and 400 hz on the active unit. Above 400 hz the NEO8's and the AMT are on one power amp channel. From the NEO8's to the AMT it is 3khz, 6db/octave using passive cap and coil. The NEO8's are in series, and both they and the AMT had rising impedance with frequency and so I put zobels across each to flaten it out.
First Possibly Relevant Problem: The peak at around 10khz in the NEO8's. Because the impedance was so smooth, I started with the 1st order crossover, and it is gradual and smooth, except for that huge spitting peak. I put in a notch filter and successfully stepped on that. If you plan on not putting on a notch filter then the crossover point to the NEO3 will have to be steep and far away.
Second Possibly Relevant Problem: Getting the cones to approach the diaphragms in transient response. I abandoned my previous idea of using transmission lines as way too large and my second and third test boxes have been sealed. Next box will be "for real" and hopefully more attractive.
Been screwing with this system on and off for, has it really been three years?!

The NEO8 is a great driver, but now I better appreciate the benefit of a smooth rolloff beyond the usable range. A rather gruff audiophile described my early attempts with these drivers as resembling a stunning supermodel who poops on the runway, a negative aspect that just cannot be glossed over.

That sounds bout right I am doing WMMTMMW I am hoping to to eq the 10k bump with the DAC xovers but guess I will see. I really don't think any Fz above 10k is critical on a center speaker because I drop it out when I listen to music. But I could be wrong. I think the center speaker is all about dialogue for movies. I am trying to make the dialogue track as clear as I can. ......
