Needle microscope - what to look for?

I'm in search of a microscope that allows me to judge the styli I'm using or an used stulus (in an used cartridge) that I'm intending to buy. Which specs do I have to look for? Are there even recommendations on some particular items?

I used a kids toy 50X before it fell into the water in the basement.
Big chunk of diamond missing on the 1974 Grado FTE stylus was pretty obvious.
Sharp edges instead of ellipse are another bad sign.
