hello everyone. i am in need of some help. i have checked my local surplus shops (which are usually pretty good), and ebay, but nothing really in my price range or need.
im looking for unipolar steppers (maybe 1.8 degree) that are around 80oz or more (100 oz would be cool). 6-8 wire doesnt matter.
i need two matching ones (these will be x and y axis), and one bigger one (an 80 oz would do actually), that will be z axis. but the x and y motors must be identical, but the z can be bigger.
im looking to spend $100 or less for all three, which seems viable. but i just cant really find any in the right ranges. so, if anyone has any surplus shops they go to regularly, and that have steppers, check them out and see if they have anything close.
if you dont know steppers, if you SEE motors that feel like they "step" when you turn them, just give me the phone number of the store, and i can call them. or, better yet, if anyone has them laying around for free 🙂
but, i can compensate someone if they find some cheap ones that will work, i can pay for your time and shipping costs. i just need three of them 🙂 thanks everyone!
but phone numbers for your favorite surplus shop work great too! (US only, shipping a motor overseas is overkill)

well, im still looking around if anyone wants to help me out! like i said before, even phone numbers of your favorite surplus shop works!
How about scrap printers, especially dot matrix type?
I don't know typical specs, so they might not suit at all, but just in case...

yeah, ive heard that. however, i need two matching ones. ive heard they arent all that powerful though. i think i MIGHT have found what i need. maybe...
I guess the stepper motors in 5.25" disc drives (floppy and MFM vintage hard drives) are too small. 8" floppy drives probably had bigger stepper motors, but those are even more obsolete.
Have you trolled Ebay? I searched for "stepper motor" and there's a number of motors that fit your requirements.

If you look into the more industrial minded dot matrix printers, you will find very high quality, high torque step motors. I have salvaged a few myself like that. Simply look up a computer surplus shop and find 2 identic printers of reasonable size.
Magura🙂
Magura,
nice seeing you again! long time no chat huh?
well, ill see what i can find. most of the computer surplus stores around here are pretty expensive, so i think a printer would run me more than a motor would. ill look.

Possible stepper motors for you
I'm not sure about the ratings of the motors that i have, or the degrees per step, but i do have 3 matching stepper motors from a some old and very large IBM daisywheel printers.
They each still have the wormdrive shaft attached to them which might also be useful to you and have an optical encoder with a slotted opt-switch on the back of them.
I'll dig them out of the garage and get back to you with specs, etc.

I have a small tote with quite a few steppers from dot-matrix & inkjet printers... i have at least 3 the same of the substantial ones from Apple ImageWriter IIs -- i haveno idea if they do what you want. I expect shipping would be on the order of $12 to CO for the 3/more id you want more of them.

dave,
sounds great. do you have dimensions or pictures of them? im just curious how big they really are.
my basic requirements are that they be unipolar (which has 6-8 wires coming out of them), and higher torque. thats about it. if that is what you have, let me know!
