Need scope advice: HP180A,C or 184A

Judging by the Tek465B that just sold on ebay.com.au for $565.00AU without probes or DM44 a 465 is a bit beyond what I'm prepared to spend.

I'm now seriously looking at a HP 180 mainframe scope. A 180A or C with 1801A (50Mhz) and 1821A plug-ins plus 10008B passive probes is within budget (low $300AU, and I could afford to pickup a decent 1:10 probe. Another option but starting to push the spending limit ($480+AU) is a 184A with 1805A (100Mhz) and 1825A plug-ins and the 10008B passive probes.

I'm mainly going to use this for amps and preamps but I'm starting to mess with reclocking circuits (16Mhz clock freq), so is it worth spending the extra to get the 100Mhz b/w or will 50Mhz do the job?

Any advice or suggestion welcome 🙂

You might want to check the US Ebay and find out
about shipping to you....
I wouldn't go for the Hewlett Packard 180 or 184 series.
I would stick with a Tektronix less headaches...

The price of Tek gear in Oz is a little rich. A small market and high demand for stuff like the 465's pushes TEK prices pretty high. That's why I''m looking seriously at the HP gear as it fits my budget.

Shipping on scopes US to AU is expensive. The spec export shipping weight for a 465 is 48lbs and domestic is 32lb. Max shipping to AU is 44lb using USPS. Using USPS air parcel and 32lb you are looking at about to $145US to ship something like a 465.

Perhaps I should restate the "any advice" as "any advice apart from 'buy tek' or 'buy from the US'. As stated the going price in Australia for Tek gear is above what I want to pay, and I'm not comfortable about shipping test gear from the states, primarily due to the difficulty of returning to the vendor if there is a problem. Using standard international postal services carries a real risk of "in transit" damage, and the charges for shipping with courier companies like fedex negate any potential savings.
 
I went with some older HP scopes. In my case, the HP 1740/41/43 series are 100Mhz scopes with various versions of delay arrangements in them. 2-channel, of course.

Most that I've seen have come out of labs and can be pretty beat up, cosmetically. Be aware that, like many older scopes, there are some things that may need attention: tantalum caps were used on many boards to for decoupling of the power supply lines. They tend to short out - replace them.

One unique thing on the 17xx series is that the power supply board tended to get really hot at the Molex connector from the power transformer. I've seen 2 out of 3 with this problem which was traced to a bunch of them that had cold solder joints on the Molex pins underneath the board. Some rebuilding is in order there.

These types of problems are typical. Lots of the former HP engineers now hang out at on an HP test group at Yahoo. I believe there are a couple of Tek groups, too.

There is a 1741 available from the same source as the other HP's and at a price midway between the 180's and 184. It does look fairly battered but might be worth considering?


The advice on tantalum replacement. Is good I'll put that high on the to-do list regardless of what I end up with.
