Gemme Audio use 4 ohm for one reason LOOK THE FREQ RESPONSE between 4 - 8 ohm version and you understand why
I'm a very big FAN of Silver Flute all serie 5-6-8 inch (4ohm) was very great woofer without need crossover (FULLPASS)
with XT vifa tweeter it's the best mix !
My front speaker is DALINE silver flute (4x) 5 inch with vifa tweeter and it's AMAZING ! I have 7 channel ALL with silver flute woofer.
I try many other midwoofer (Peerless - Audax - Vifa - HiVi - Visaton - etc...) and the sound of silver flute is simply CRAZY !
Thanks !

My system is :
Shigaclone CD player
DAC LAMPUCERA 1,0
Gainclone LM4780 amplifier (2 channel)
7.1 preamp & bluRay by PC
Gainclone LM4780 amplifier (5 channel)
7 channel loudspeaker (SilverFlute-Vifa)
Powered Subwoofer 7cf Eosone 12 inch
Are you saying that you don't use a coil on the woofer?
Looking at the manufacturer's graph, there is a hump at about 5k on just about all of them.
Face, and I are friends. We both are working on very similar projects. I am running two 5.5 Silver flutes, and yes the bump at 5k that most SF drivers have is very sharp bump. My original idea was to go 6db on the woofer, and 18 on the Vifa ring radiator. I spoke to Madisound, and the tech was against it. I like my XO's simple, and I thought that my idea was good. I wanted to roll off the 5.5's at 4k with an inductor, but was advised against it. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ben

Here. I just finished a project using the 5.5" woofer (and there's another one on my site as well)ben62670 said:Face, and I are friends. We both are working on very similar projects. If you look at my crossover for the China Syndrome and the Orient Express, you see that I used an "elliptical" filter to snub the big breakup mode on the woofers. The breakup is at different places, depending on whether you're using the shielded or unshielded driver.
If you're not comfortable with the elliptical filter, then I'd recommend a shunt LCR notch filter (perhaps integrated as part of the Low Pass filter, as Roman Bednarek did in his
Microbes.
The other thing to contend with that woofer is that it has a broad hump across 1000 Hz, which tends to make the speaker exceptionally honky and not very fun to listen to. The easiest solution to that, however, is to cross at 2 KHz or below.
Hope that helps!
I am using the 8" 8ohm silver flute in a TL hybrid enclosure along with a Fostex 4"
I have seen the same driver used in a smaller, ported enclosure with a ribbon tweeter.
I have to admit, I think the 6.5" is a better sounding driver, but I really like what these drivers do. Without a crossover, the 5k hump and the cone break up aren't a problem unless you are driving them super hard. I haven't been able to drive mine to that point because the fostex break up long before the SF do.
In the enclosures I have heard with only a tweeter on the top end, they have performed extremely well, but I would say they aren't getting too awfully low. There is one exception, but the woofer is SEVERELY modified for that application.
Has anyone heard the Zaph design? I like the looks of that one too.
So what is the final verdict on this project? Are you doing the 1.5 way "clone" of the Gemme or has it morphed into something different?
Take care,
Robert

I think you might be misunderstanding the term "cone breakup." When someone says "cone breakup" or "breakup mode" it's a naturally-occurring resonance in the woofer that makes it spike in its response (hopefully outside of its useful range--aka: "bandpass"). It doesn't really take any power at all to excite the breakup mode of a driver, just as how you can hear the resonance of a bell just by tapping it with your fingernail. The breakup is a natural part of most drivers' inherent frequency response. The best way to deal with the breakup is to filter out those frequencies from the signal before they reach the driver, so as not to excite it.musgofasa said:

When you drive a speaker too hard, you will have problems with overexcursion ("popping") and perhaps cone distortion (like a guitar amplifier). But that's really unrelated to "cone breakup," which is an audible, unwanted peaking in the response of a driver caused by exciting its natural resonance, and occurs in the driver at any and all volumes.
