The first and the easiest to check is the detector diode considering it to be an AM radio.
Next check all the 3 transistors in the converter and IF stages.

The block diagram of a radio receiver will consist of an antenna, a converter, IF stages, a detector and an audio amp.
If u trace the hot wire of the volume control, u will most probably reach the detector diode. It will be two leaded glass(maybe) encapsulated component. just unsolder it watching its which-lead-goes-where and cold check using a DMM. It should show low resistance in one direction and high the other way.
