Given my current AVR as a preamp situation, though, would you recommend a separate and simple gain stage for the F4?
Wait, I think I found the answer for that using the BA for gain. But then, how much different would a BA+F4 be than just going BA-3? Ugh, so many choices. Anyway, I’m open to other suggestions for gain stage. BA is one I just happened to stumble across. Maybe there are better/simpler ones.
There are plenty of possible preamp ideas you could try.
Wayne's head phone amp, ACP +, BA3 as preamp, Some Zen preamps, Tube preamps.

F4 is probably better, as you can hook up anything to it because of the jfet buffer.
F4 is going to give you more freedom.

BA3 has about 7x gain. Please consider how much power you need.
And I have both BA3 and M7 and 86db speaker. BA3 can't provide enough gain for F4. And I prefer M7+F4. You may like other more.

7 x gain is virtually clipping the amp with 2V rms source.
It will depend on his source equipment.
Easy to make preamp with 10x gain though.

Would my Denon AVR (or any decent AVR with pre-outs) be able to drive the F4 with no gain? I’m thinking it would struggle to drive my inefficient speakers (87db). Again, I’m basing this on what little I know.
Thanks!
What model is it?
I am guessing that is an amplifier/receiver?
If it's 30W per channel or more you could certainly drive it from the amp output if the preamp out didn't have adequate gain.

Denon AVR-3500H
One possibility I could get behind if a gain stage is necessary, or even if it isn’t, would be to add a tube gain stage to an F4. Something tells me that would be special.
A Denon HT reciver or any other HT reciver do not have a lot of gain on the preout (you may have the option to boost the output by 12db or so with the DSP). If you are planing on using this for HT use also, then you need a bit of power. I would not recommend a low gain and/or a low watt class A amp in a setup with HT reciver and 87db speakers.

I wouldn't use an AVR anywhere near my stereo setup but if used as a stepping stone, while you're building a decent preamp then no problem.
Whatever you decide you're going to want to build a preamp or buffer anyway. The plan should be to eventually get the AVR out of your stereo setup altogether.
