4 years ago I built some Big ol MTM's with dayton 8" Classic woofers and a Dayton silk dome tweeter. I cannot remember the name of the plan or who built them orig. but I did like them, anyways....
I gave these big ol speakers to my boss's son (he loves them)
Now I want to build something nice for myself once again. I listen to 70's 80's 90's, to current rock N roll and all the areas around rock.
I want to use a seperate subwoofer maybe 2? this time with a big plate amp from madisound or PE.
I have no idea where to start on the speakers for the mains. Something tells me I want a array just because the soundstage would maybe sound like a concert? Im not sure. I want that in your chest drums and just awesome sound! It may not be reasonable but I can fork out 600US$ for my fix on these main speakers. I will also do a built post. I am 25 and out of work from major spine surgery so I have extra time to use. Please help me on my new project! If this is not enough info to get started, please let me know what you need to know! Thanks!
Derek.

That design was called the Dayton 8. I still think for the money it is one of the best designs around, if you have the space. I'm not sure what your budget is, but I would love to try this:
Zaph|Audio SB12.3 ~ SB Acoustics 12", Dual Midrange, 3-Way from Madisound

Ah yes the Dayton 8! That's what it is. I still really like these. But I want to try something different now. Not that i am bored with the sound, i just want to try something that can handle more power, more punch, a different design, maybe something that can be adapted in with a seperate subwoofer for the low lows. Do people use tower speakers with say two 12's or 15's per side along with a seperate subwoofer for the very low 30-60 hz range?
Thanks woof. My budget would be up to 600US$ That suggestion of yours is out of my price range. Im only aware of the PE design page so far and less then a handful of other designs out there.
Would the multiple 5" drivers here equal up to the sound of 10" woofers? Or would the bigger speaker always sound better in the midbass region. This looks like an interesting kit. Also says there are plans for an additional 5" woofer.
I am very interested in this thread. I am looking for something much the same. A great sounding rock speaker that can replicate the in your chest thump of base drums and the great soundstage you'd expect at a live show. My budget is a bit higher but I am interested in the suggestions that come out of this thread.
I did not see an edit button for my previous post. Here is the link I forgot to post on my question in post #5

Anyone ever build a Zalytron Axon 812 array. Would like your comments on this speaker, it seems quite cheap. The Zaph Kit is also interesting.

Sure way to achieve what you are looking for is using pro dirvers. There is a nice design using a 12" Eminence Kappalite 3012HO + QSC waveguide + B&C DE160 conpression driver called 'No Quarter':
Can you smell what Brando's cooking!? - AVS Forum
It's more than 500$ though.
Ok just to catch up here, I just bought a adcom GFA 555II on ebay! What a score. 200x2 at 8ohms! Now I have some serious power for my project! Selling my Nice Marantz model 140 in orig. wood case if anyone is interested!
How do the horns compare to regular style drivers? Are horns supposed to take care of treble/midrage section? and the woofers for midbass on down? what about adding a subwoofer to something like that PA style set-up?

I'd agree with daniel - a decent 12" with horn tweeter would seriously outdo more hifi-like speakers in terms of rock n roll.
Dad's got some old McKenzie speakers, which sound awful, until you play rock through them, then it just sounds "right". I think it's the crudeness of the design that fits in with the musical style.

Lots of info in the links I posted here earlier today. How do the horns compare to regular style drivers? Are horns supposed to take care of treble/midrage section? and the woofers for midbass on down? what about adding a subwoofer to something like that PA style set-up?

I have narrowed my search to the following. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Has anyone tried these kits yet? Pros and cons? Thanks again guys!

Zaph|Audio ZA5.5 Tall Tower 2.5-Way, Pair from Madisound
Axon Array-1 The Axon array is the an incredible value. Twelve Axon 6S1 midwoofers are joined by four Axon T1S tweeters in each cabinet to give a stunning sound presentation that only a line array can deliver. Sensitivity 98 dbs / 2.83v / 1 m

I believe JBL do something similar to the 2x15" suggested above. Not sure how much they'll be over there, but may be worth a look second hand...
