I wanted to connect my vintage gear to a DCX-2496 (AES-digital input) and have bought a cheap (16€) converter because it`s the easiest way to change between USB-PC and stereo amp. or tape deck out. Just one lead from one converter to the other.
The converter is working very well from 20Hz to 8KHz but then sharply drops. Thanks DCX I can set a filter to correct the frequency response but this workaround actually is second best.
Amazon is selling a lot of similar converters but all of them are reviewed badly. Same electronic design, different housings - I guess.
My converter has a bit different layout. It has built in a Cirrus Logic 5340 as A to D and a CS8406 as transmitter to Toslink-S/PDIF. Well built, I have to admit.
1. What do you think causes this frequency drop? A wrong input stage design? Where do I have to look for?
2. And - although I would be willing to spend more money, I couldn't find a better converter. No matter how deep I googled.

If you can, check the component values in the input stage. If any of these were the wrong value (say off by a factor of 10) that would give exactly the effect you describe.
There used to be a DIY-kit for an ADC in very good quality from beis.de, might be worth having a look through those pages to see if either of them work for you (there are several versions/revisions by now).

With a sample pool of one it is a bit early to suggest a design error. An assembly error, OTOH, is another matter. The first thing I would do is monitor the input to ADC chip. A buffer built out of a dual opamp would do.

I want to let you know that I have given up and that I'm now going the analog way into the DCX2496.
It was to hard if not impossible to read all the component's values. So I sent the converter back.
And sadly Mr. Beis didn't answer my email.

I use this very cheap converter with my minidsp and it's surprisingly ok kebidu Analog to Digital ADC Converter Optical Coax RCA Toslink Audio Sound Adapter SPDIF Adaptor for Apple TV for Xbox 360 DVD|analog to digital|rca toslinkdigital to analog - AliExpress I haven't measured it though. It uses a PCM1802 converter, and a blank IC which I assume is the SPDIF/TOSLINK output tranceiver/sample rate converter. If you are interested I can post a photo of the board.

In the meantime I have purchased a used Sony 930 QS Minidisc Player which also completes my collection of the QS series. It now works as a wonderful AD converter and digitally feeds the DXC. This works excellent.
