I recently completed a pair of ariels and was interested in building a center channel. I have read however that the results aren't very good when you place an ME2 on it's side. The speaker would be used solely for home theater no dvd audio or anything. Any suggestions on what I should do or if anyone else has used the ME2 as a center channel I would appreciate any help that you can come up with. thanks
MTM as centre
The MTM loudspeaker is designed to be listened to in a vertical position with the tweeter best positioned at ear level. Anywhere with say 10º of this vertically is usually OK.
Now put that on the side and you have a speaker that effectively beams all the sound straight down the centre. Great for the person in the "best seat" but not real flash for thoise watching a bit off axis to the sides !!
Ok what to do about this?
I have had quite good success with spreading this sound filed by angling the 2 woofers back at about 10-15º (depending on spread required, but no more than this.
This way the centre seat still gets the slightly off-axis response of the drivers and those off centre get a resonable sound level from the centre speaker.
Don't forget, you cannot use the P13WH and SS drivers if using a tube TV, you must hunt down the shielded versions of these.
Converting the Ariel design to an angled front may be a bit awkward, but should not be impossible.
Good Luck !!

Does this help?
here is a pic of a centre I built using the Vifa p13 shielded version and a D27?? shielded. I could probably search out the dimensions if you emailed me and if I can find them! gradds@iprimus.com.au
