Only finding European sources wanting $$$$ for shipping.
Hoping to find a US source, or at least some detailed belt specs.
Also would like a downloadable service manual.

Probably the mechanism was bought ready from Philips or Sony, look at the circuit board or the entire unit.
Then it becomes easy.
There was a belt specialist in Texas, mentioned on the Condor Audio web site, the man is an ex pilot in Israel, who does high end restoration, he gets belts from there.
There are only two kinds of belt, thick and thin, for the CD tray.
So what kind of belt kit is needed?

A CD pr DVD mechanism is too complicated for a small maker to make themselves, and it was available as a bought out item.
The Philips CD-4 was used by Bang & Olufsen, for example.
If it is needing service, replace it, here DVD-R units for PC use are less than15 Dollars, CD ROM is long obsolete.

I checked, it was made in Japan for Carver, only as usual he fiddled with the circuit to add channel separation, and some minor tweaks, and priced it at about $700, just because he could.
Carver was good at stating the obvious, like many costly names, so as to justify the high price.
Service manual at hifiengine.
It would be better to replace the mechanism, as there would have been mechanical wear, it is from 1986-87 or so.
I use a PC to copy files on to the hard disk, and then manipulate the data.

Now it is difficult to find blank CD and DVD, new computers do not have optical drives as standard. So production will end in some time.
Even if the repair is successful, think of an alternate way to listen to your music.

I've checked with Voice of Music, Turntable Needles, Ebay, Amazon and many more, with no luck. I need more sources. HiFi Engine only has the user manual. I need the service manual to get part numbers. These are just 2 little flat belts. Changing the drive is not an option.
Can you measure the existing belts?
Inner Diameter x section thickness, and profile, round or square.
In millimeters.
You then reduce the size by about 2 mm diameter to compensate for wear.
You get O rings in those sizes from rubber suppliers... and auto parts shops.
They are tiny, or you can make from cord cut to size and stuck with Super Glue.
Flat belts same thing, inner length into section. Try cassette player belts, you will find something I am sure.
Not more than $5 each.

You may be looking for CD mechanism belts, a more general search will turn up something useful.
It is a synthetic rubber part, go for Neoprene or Viton if you have a choice. Natural ages faster than synthetic.

These are per a friend's request. The player is not in my possession.
I simply need sources for Carver CD belts.
Or at least a copy of the service manual.
Please spare me the technical education, as I have been servicing electronics for over 50 years.
I have hundreds of belts in my inventory, but without the player or belt specs, they do me no good.

Oh
A fellow traveler.
I bought my first soldering iron in 1978, now 43 years ago, still have it.
I would get the thing over and take a look, it seems Carver had the units made in Japan for them.
So it is really a bought out unit, and I have seen Sony, Toshiba and maybe Pioneer mechanisms in Japanese units.
Korean LG and Samsung came in later, and of course Philips was there.
For Carver to have a mechanism specially made, the order volumes would be very much more than their capacity to sell.
See what is under the hood, so to speak, and then look for a replacement.
Or have the owner send you the original ones in the mail, if they are able to do so.

I'd have the unit on my bench first, give it a look, then procede with finding the proper replacement parts.
I don't like dealing with having to work "blind" on things.
Agreed. But that's not possible in this case.
There are plenty of vendors that sell belt kits for specific models and that's what I'm searching for.

Scroll below, people have been searching for these since 2007, you can see how many replied.
You can try PM'ing those posters to see how they fared.

I recommend using caution with these vendors who claim to offer belt kits for specific brands/models.Agreed. But that's not possible in this case.

Recently I purchased a very collectible vintage CD player cheap because the previous owner had tried replacing the tray belts with a belt kit purchased from eBay. But that belt kit failed to fix the issue with the disc tray. So the person gave up and sold the CD player. When I inspected it, one belt was too short, the other too long. I located belts of the correct size and they work perfectly.
I also tried a couple of these eBay belt-kit vendors when I was restoring a reel-reel tape deck which needed several belts. Every item I received was either too loose or too tight. So much so that these belts were unusable.
Eventually I located a vendor who sells belts by size (circumference, thickness, width, or “cross-section” for square belts). I measured the dimensions of the old belts. Then I multiplied their measured circumference by 0.95 to compensate for the old belts being worn and stretched. This time the new belts fit perfectly.
If the old belt is totally missing I wrap a string around the pulleys and measure it’s length after unwrapping.

I sometimes purchase specific belts from Voice of Music and Turntable Needles to name a few. Never from eBay. (Although I do operate an eBay store: RKA TechGoods)
I'm well aware of the measuring techniques and I have several hundred belts in my inventory. But in this case, this is for a friend who lives hundreds of miles away and he's an invalid, so I need belts that are spec'd for this unit, which I've stated repeatedly in this thread.
