I really liked the Criag Anderton "Tube Sound Fuzz" for the tube-like smoothness it gave. And because it utilized a CMOS hex inverter chip, one 9volt battery without the need for virtual ground would last a long time.

IMHO, the responsiveness of a fuzz face like circuit is great, it really does react to your playing more than opamp based tube screamer-esque circuits. There is something "extra special" about having just the two transistors, there's a bit of "give" in there.

I built the BOYC Fuzzface and it's my favorite distortion pedal amongst my Boss Super Overdrive, DS-1, and MXR Distortion+. I made the test rig to test my germaniums for gain and leakage. The only frustration was how long it took to realize that it must have some sort of buffer before it's input. Otherwise the volume goes way down, especially with my old wah pedal before it. I just place any other pedal directly before it that has a buffer, which can be a Boss tuner.
