I'm trying to build a 2-10w amp that will run off of batteries that will power a pair of 6" car speakers that I pulled out of my car. I've already built a lm386 and ba546 amp but they just aren't powerful enough.

Try a TDA 2005-based amp or even an STK amp. I have an STK amp and it sounds pretty good with my homemade loudspeakers. You may not be able to use an STK amp in your car though.

I found plans for a tda2005 amp and hopefully I'll order the chip and other electronic components soon. Thanks for your help.
Try the LM3875
This amp on a chip can be used in both inverting and normal fashion. There is an entire board on www.ezboard.com devoted to single chip amps and the LM3875 seems to be the favorite. The only difficulty with the LM1875/3875 is that leads should be short. I think that it's a great little chip.
Linn uses a single chip amp (it's a TDA) in their Majik.
